Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner. I love(d) Australia, went there 2.5 years ago, thought I could retire or at least spend a year there in the future like a sabbatical...but what I have said to people who self-hate America in conversations is that Australia has crazy border policies and detention centers off shore, which never gets discussed and they do not get called on it while the US is always hated on. Your point is 100 percent correct and I want to yell that at the tv when this story comes up!
Aussies tended to be most Pro-America of any place we visited, our tour guide told us they (at least the older ones) still appreciate the US, bc Japan was running rampant around the Pacific and was coming for Australia and we stopped that (his words not mine). That being said Melbourne was full of hipsters who want to be SF This is all baffling to me.

There were like a couple hundred people out of at least 300,000 that were there that went inside the capitol. There are videos of police letting them in through the front door! The answer is that the majority of Australians think this is all ridiculous, but the very vocal minority (just like in the US) can seem overwhelming due to the press making things seem bigger than they are.
If you turn off the news and go out and live your life, you will find everyone getting along just fine but for that one person over in the corner who watches the news too much.

I love (actually hate) when a news source quotes one local who has no basis or support for their awful opinion. This happened in earlier covid times where Id read some random loser in Italy was baffled and shocked at the US response, and it happened here where Reuters quoted some nobody in Melbourne who said Djokovic should and would be deported. Literally some rando on the street. WTF, I see and read too much bs.
