When is the public outrage going to start being focused on the many, many country clubs out there that are even more exclusive than Augusta has been? The ones that don't let women, blacks, Jews, etc?

Oh, that's right, they don't host the Masters.

I don't have an issue with Augusta letting in, or not letting in, anyone they don't want to let in. That's their issue. But let's not pretend that they weren't targeted because they're in public spotlight already.

Now that Augusta National has taken down their barriers, these other clubs are going to feel the pressure.

Yes, it's because they host the Masters that there is more of a spotlight on them, but it's also that they are a club that others clubs aspire to be like. Don't discredit THAT aspect. Augusta National are leaders, and other clubs will follow.

There are hundreds maybe even thousands of clubs that wont allow women members. Too many to list.

Know Augusta is invitation only, but how do they choose to invite? Do they have a list of people who have said they would be interested?

Several wks before this year's Masters, a president of a Fortune 500 Company died & that company's president had been an AN member going back to its beginning. He was succeeded by a woman, it's first ever female president. So there was wide spread assumption that she would be the first female member. Guessing that this started the ball rolling. IF nothing else, this will shut up the lead female sports columnist at USA Today as she is usually good for several rants a yr bout this. As to the comment about Baton Rouge Country Club, from what I have heard is you will find neither Catholics or Jews in its membership, but will stand corrected if this is old news.

The USA today article citing an unamed source says that Dr. Rice and the other new member have been under consideration for 5 years or more. I think the other prospective member you are thinking of is the CEO of IBM.

And not that further proof is needed, but Christine Brennan is an idiot.

The only thing funnier than the people who were pissed before, are the people who are pissed now.

Freedom of association please.

There are demographics in our society who disagree with you, if that means they are going to be excluded from the most desirable bastions of white maleness. Being included in those bastions is very important to them. And they will start movements and raise hell for inclusion.

You don't request to be invited to Augusta National. There's no application process. The members choose who to invite, extend an invitation, and that person either says yes or no. I heard a funny story while at The Masters practice round this year...Augusta was said to have extended an invite to someone, and along with the invitation, an invoice for $100K was sent. The prospective member called the club and asked if he could make 2 payments of $50K each. He never got an answer or a green jacket. No idea if that's true, but I hope it is.

As far as women and private clubs go, Augusta is far from the last place to allow women to gain membership. Pine Valley and Butler National don't even allow women on the grounds.

I find it hard to believe he received an invoice for $100k. Rumor has membership costing somewhere between $10-30k up front. It's cheap because of the enormous revenue the club generates from the Masters.

Yea, during the same trip I took last year, someone told me that the members don't even pay dues anymore because the revenue from CBS/Masters more than pays for their annual expenses. I'm sure the story I told was bullshite, but it sounds awesome because that's what I'd expect from Augusta.

Exactly. If the person asked to pay $30k in two installments, they instantly became personna non grata (sp?)

I picture it going something like:

Augusta: We'd like you to join our club.

Invitee: Awesome, would love to. How much?

Augusta: Nevermind

A quote from an article on ESPN..

quote:

In a previous life, Payne was the head of the Atlanta Olympics. Four years before the Games, before he was a member of Augusta National, Payne was part of a press conference at the club in which it was announced that golf would return to the Olympics -- and at Augusta National. That announcement took place in 1992. (Just imagine, for a moment, how cool it would have been to see golf at Augusta National as an Olympic sport at a time of year when the club is traditionally closed. Think about the ticket demand, the television possibilities.) That blew up because of the club's membership policies, and golf was never played in the 1996 Olympics, a fact Payne ruefully acknowledged as those Games were about to close.

How awesome would that have been to have the first Olympic golf in forever to be at Augusta?

Pine Valley has loosened it's rules on women. They now can play on Sunday afternoons
