Criticism is fine, everyone deserves criticism to some extent. But LOL at saying he isn't an ace when he has consistently been a Cy Young-level pitcher for the past three seasons and pitched 6 scoreless innings to clinch the franchise's first World Series in 26 years.
He's an ace by every standard and metric.

If he had better strikeout numbers you don't see the chatter about him not being one, IMO.

Meh, strikeouts can be overrated in some cases (See: Morton, Charlie). Avg EV and OBP give a better idea.

Oh yeah for sure but chicks, sportswriters, and casuals dig strikeouts

Fried is not a blow-it-past-you kind of a pitcher.
He was throwing 96 MPH sinkers and touched 99 with his 4 seamer with RISP in the World Series last year.

what about Riley to LF
That's gonna be a "No" for me, dawg.

Why do people feel like Riley HAS to be 3B? Like who gives a frick where he plays in the field? His bat is why he is in the majors.
For the sake of the argument, if Grissom finds consistency at the plate next season, why would the better choice be to play him in the OF - something he has never done before - and Riley at 3B when Grissom would be a better glove and arm at 3B and Riley has actually played LF?
Make it make sense.

Has Grissom ever played 3rd at any point?

I'm sure he played it high school at some point, regardless his entire life has been on the left side of the infield.
And there's less of a learning curve for SS > 3B than there is for SS > LF.

Fair but I'm fine w/Riley at 3B. His DRS is actually decent and he's a better fielder than given credit for.

But I think it's safe to assume that a career SS would be a better overall glove at third.
We already know Grissom has the better arm.

For what? In a bigger package for a SS or LF? A higher end SP to a team trying to save money? A back-end bullpen guy? Trying to restock the farm with some more position players?
Use Ian to get Ozuna off the team. Package them together and hope some team thinks they are getting the guy who had a no-hitter in 6 innings at the World Series.

I don't know about this. Wasn't Riley a borderline elite HS pitching prospect? His range isn't the greatest, but he has a cannon for an arm.

Their IF velos were the same coming out of high school. Vaughn's arm in the minors was one of the reasons why the Braves were keeping him at SS despite not grading out with the best range for that position.

Good info. I did not know this.

It's annoying seeing a team take advantage of the Phillies pitching.

quote:this makes some sense, but it’s concerning that he started bad, found his form for a few months, then fell apart down the stretch. How much of that is on the off-season and how much of it is just a 38 year old wearing down over a long season? I also think 20 million during the season was a mistake even if you’re fully sold on Charlie for next year. Things might have changed, but when we signed him he basically said it was ATL, TB, or retirement. We probably could have gone into the off-season, gauged the possibilities in better pitchers, and still eventually brought Morton back for less. Hell, flirting with degrom enough would probably have gotten cohen to do something really stupid , but now that is seemingly off the table
AA talked about it on Chuck and Chernoff yesterday. He said Morton's stuff was still great (which is true) and then he talked a bunch about the differences in Morton's career when he's had a full offseason as opposed to when he hasn't. It made sense and I have some optimism for it.

Most teams wanted to draft him as a pitcher.
