You guys are never happy on here unless you're miserable or always bitching about something. The guy is a 2X Executive of the Year and gave us a World Series last year. It's fricking tired at this point.
Meh.
I saw someone on Twitter say that the trade didn’t seem all-out bad, but it seemed incomplete, and that sums it up pretty well. There was no reason to get rid of Contreras—even if he wasn’t going to play one inning at catcher. Cheap and under control until 2027! But maybe there’s more to come.
And to be fair, AA hasn’t hit on much besides the 2021 trade deadline, which probably gives him a lifetime pass, because frick yes, we won a World Series, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to make sense of seemingly senseless moves. You act like we’re personally attacking AA, and that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
We basically traded the farm this week and didn’t address any of our biggest needs. That’s all.

110% agree

I guess the good news is that this trade basically forces our hand into spending.

I don't think so. I think this trade signals that we're putting all of our eggs in the Arcia and Grissom basket (or sign someone washed up like Andrus). There's nothing left on the farm to go get a good shortstop and I believe Dansby is already priced out.

Watching AA’s presser I would be shocked if a SS isn’t added. That was my biggest takeaway. Kept on talking about how the season doesn’t start today and there are plenty of external options at SS.

No way we go into the season with Arcia/Grissom at SS and Ozuna/Rosario in LF imo. Absolutely zero chance.

and if I were a Brewers fan I'd be looking like this

You guys don't have to trust AA(which is dumb), but I trust him explicitly. And I will trust him till he proves otherwise.
Dude, I was against ever hiring the guy, because I watched him sell the farm in Toronto for a tiny little window of playoff contention that fell apart. I wanted no part of that here.
He was very fortunate, as were we all, that some very low risk moves at the '21 deadline struck gold. That cannot be the standard by which we judge everything he does, forever. I was super upset when he included Langeliers in the Olson trade, because he was very clearly the catcher of the future, and that position is very important. Now, here we sit, and he trades William Contreras.... for a catcher.
But that wasn't enough, he threw the farm at Oakland, yet again, as if Murphy were prime Ivan Rodriguez, which he is nowhere close. He traded our best remaining hitting prospect a few days ago for a middle reliever. He threw a 20 million dollar extension at Charlie Morton, who's coming off his worst season since before his time with the Astros.
I don't know what he's doing anymore. He's invested a huge amount of money into a couple of rookies, with the hope that it turns into a bargain, but what if it doesn't? He's playing Russian Roulette. It's all or nothing, and yet, his "all in" involves sinking money and prospects into guys that are barely moving the needle in some cases.

Correa and Swanson are out of range, I think. It doesn't seem like Milwaukee is trading Adames, and my pipe dream (Andres Giminez) is a non-starter now without Contreras to send back (ETA: Murphy and a young pitcher might actually get this done, ironically, but that would be shocking if AA turned around and traded Murphy).
Shewmake is not a real option and if he is, a lot of other things have gone horribly wrong.
With those options off the board, we're looking at someone like Elvis Andrus and hoping he becomes the first human in history to reverse age.

I'm going to go ahead and get my hopes up for Correa.

Ruiz is a threat on the basepaths and stole 85 bases in the minor leagues in 2022. However, there are concerns about his defense and lack of solid contact. An opportunity to turn him into three players, including an All-Star catcher and quality reliever, seemed almost unfathomable, yet that’s exactly what Matt Arnold and the Brewers did.

Finding someone to replace Piña is not exactly difficult. I’m sure a few NRI guys will compete for that role without a $4,000,000 guarantee. Murphy is better than Contreras. Not like we got worse today.
When we see how the other two holes are filled we can better judge the use of capital.

We’ve got a Chadwick Tromp C on the 40-man. Whoever the hell he is.

Don’t disagree.
But we have used Contreras, Mueller, Tarnok, and Malloy and have more needs than we started with and less ammunition.

Agreed. We will see.

It sounds like Murphy is going to catch 7 out of 10 or so anyway so not sure 3 catchers will be necessary. This move definitely created some more questions although I think the Murphy acquisition is really being undersold by our fans. Having arguably the best defensive catcher in the game is a huge deal.

I just put down $100 on the Braves to win the WS.
