Bummer hits free agency after the 2024 season, so this move makes zero sense unless we wanted to open up MLB roster spots for bigger moves.

Yeah.. the only reason that makes sense to me.

And frick, I really liked Lopez as a utility infielder. Damnit, no more Team Nicky.

Y’all just got fleeced by the most dysfunctional organization in baseball ????

Player dump?
It clearly is. Got rid of a bunch of guys who likely were never going to play a roll moving forward and likely get non tendered anyways

I don’t understand why a team with so few options in the minors is dumping their somewhat tradable pitchers, and some potential long term project infielders, and a minor leaguer. The return is nothing worthwhile based on the stats, so I guess we will see. It is an odd time to release a trade notice as well. What else is going on?

Passan says he’s under Club Control through 2026

I still feel like we could've leveraged Soroka for something better. There is definitely some team out there that thinks they can bring him back to his former glory.
Regardless, imagine telling a Braves fans after the 2019 season that, 4 years later, we'd be trading him to the Chicago White Sox as part of a package for a reliever that had an ERA nearly 6.

Ah, well there is no way in hell we pick up those options

Balking on Lopez' $4m option only makes sense if we are going for a starting SS to bump Arcia back down to the UI role or for a starting LF.
Else why wouldn't you pay such a cheap deal for a dude on the bench who could field every position in a pinch?
I'm going to be livid if we have a Sam Hilliard equivalent player on our bench in Lopez' place making the league minimum.

Braves obviously coveted Bummer or they would have just non tendered Lopez and Soroka. Would be interested from the White Sox perspective to know how they valued the optionable guys. I would guess Gowens and maybe Shuster were their primary targets and it turned into this as Braves were cleaning up the 40 man. Bowman indicated the Braves never even considered tendering Soroka so I’m sure every team in the sport was made aware he was available for very little.
Bummer’s Baseball Savant page is interesting. No walks and no barrels. Really good breaking ball. Very similar to the Pierce Johnson profile.
Gowens sucks to lose potentially but Soroka/Lopez were going for nothing and the other 2 guys blow.

There are at least 5 arms in our farm that project better than him so I'm not sure how much of a future he had with us, but it is wild that we had to throw him in as a sweetener when we already were giving up 4 other guys for a reliever the White Sox were more than likely looking to dump.

Ideally Arcia is on the bench. I’m on the same page as you that he is not an every day SS.
But if Arcia is the starting SS I think paying somebody $800k to fill that Lopez role in April/May/June makes more sense than locking up Lopez. I would much rather have $4m of flexibility than rostering both Nicky Lopez and Orlando Arcia for a full season. If you need to go get somebody there are a million Nicky Lopez’s out there. Hell, you will probably be able to get Nicky Lopez himself back in July if necessary. But ideally the $4m goes to Sonny Gray or someone like that and Charlie Culberson can be the mascot for a few months for $800k.
