Derek Fischer- I worked for UNO athletic department when we played Arkanasas LR for the NCAA bid. I didn't think I was looking at someone who was going to have an 18 NBA year career

A big body with decent athleticism and finesse is pretty much always going to be valued by the NBA. Big Baby has JUST enough that he is, whether he can barely dunk or not.

I was always surprised that DeSagana Diop managed a 14-year career averaging 2 pts and 4 rebs.

Ronde Barber was someone people thought should've stayed in college longer. He played forever it seems like.

Also Boris Diaw doesn't look like he should be able to play in the NBA but he still gets it done in the role he's asked to fill.

Side note, doesn't it seem like JR Smith has been in the league forever? He's younger than Lebron.

Nolan Ryan was at the top of my list. As a power pitcher, he figured to be someone who would wear out, or at best convert himself into a "junk ball pitcher". But he pitched until his late 40s, and was a power pitcher to the very end.

I don't know anyone mentioned Darrell Green.

Guy played 19 seasons as a db & was still playing at a high level later on in his career.

Only retired in 2002 (drafted in 1983) at age 42.

Andre Miller has played forever.

John Stockton was still effective when he retired about 40ish.

NBA big men can last a long time...Parrish, Ewing, Abdul-Jabbar....

Of the group that Nazr Mohammed played with in college, if you would've told me he'd been the elder statesman in the NBA when it was all said and done I'd probably have laughed at you.

Matt Hasselbeck.

One of 5 active NFL players who played in the 90s. Two are kickers, one is Charles Woodson, and the other is Peyton Manning. Manning and Hasselbeck were separated by 186 picks in the 1998 draft.

Some good answers. You're right, I was thinking more along the lines of players who were good in their prime and managed to hang on longer than expected at a decent level. A guy like nazr doesn't surprise me because serviceable 7 footers will have a place as long as they can still walk. The fact that Bonner had any career is surprising, but his game is one that was the same at 20 or 35.

I couldn't believe Tim Thomas was still in the league towards the end of his career when he was playing for Dallas.
