average age of an Olympic sprinter is 25.
This sport is 100% pure athleticism. I will change my answer to 25. Which is depressing, as I am 26.

Swimming - Interesting USA Swimming analysis...
Check out the chart below which shows the average age of our Olympians for each games:
When we look at our medalists the evolution of our Olympic rosters continues to be apparent. In 1984 the average age of our medalists was 21.2 for the men and 18.7 for the women. In 2012 our average male medalist was 26.2 and our average female medalist was 21.4. This progression has been similar to that of our roster as a whole, see below.
Average age got older over last few Olympics but Michael Phelps also got older 15, 19, 23, 27 (the trend basically tracks Phelps' age)

25-29 physical peak.
early 30s mental peak.
Believe it or not, your 1 rep max in strength training is at its peak in your later 40s; however, endurance peak are in your late 20s.

Interesting...
Sounds like it's time for me to hit the gym and train for a 1 rep max

I wouldn't be shocked to one day learn Dana Torres and Brett Favre used performance enhancers. There is no way you have your best statistical seasons when you are 40.

Maybe 22 for absolute peak athleticism.

Physical peak is maybe 23-26. Peak performance is 28-31

Besides Vicodin and happy endings after each practice from smokin hot "trainers"?
ETA: One enters peak athleticism around the age of 25 fwiw.. That's when the average male stops devloping, thus any gains afterwards are the result of increased mental capacity attributable to one's skill set

I think they did a study in this before. And it depends on the sport. And in football, position matters as well. RBs, it's probably 22-27.
Basketball is like 27-32 I think. It's when your physical ability and mental part of the game meet. When you are young like 20, physically you're up there. Mentally, not so much. When you're older, you know the nba game and understand it better. But physically, your shot.

I keep hearing it's 27- but I can do things now at 30 that I've never been able to do. I don't know how long it'll last or if it's late blooming, but it seems like once guys are 33ish, it's not the same anymore.

I'm 30s and as strong as I have ever been and same/similar weight as I have pretty much always been. But, I have definitely declined in all areas of pure athleticism. Meaning leaping ability, quickness and straightline speed.

it's why you see the best body builders in their 30's and 40's

i feel like, obviously, a lot is contingent on sport, position and the required attributes needed to play that position at a high level.
like goalkeepers playing into their 40s, pitchers getting better into their 30s, interior linemen still going strong in their mid 30s, running backs turning to dust in their late 20s, etc.

What doesn't make sense to me is the Jagr, Lidstrom, Chelios, Selanne types playing until 40.
