The Oakland Athletics have reached agreement to put their new ballpark on part of the site of the current Tropicana property along the Las Vegas Strip.

Bally's Corp. announced Monday that, in conjunction with Gaming & Leisure Properties, Inc., it has reached a binding agreement with the A's for the site.

Plans call for a 30,000-seat ballpark projected to draw more than 2.5 million people per year, per Bally's. Previous reports estimated the cost of the stadium at $1.5 billion, with $395 million in public financing.

Under the agreement, Bally's and GLPI will set aside about nine acres of the 35-acre parcel at Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue for the A's or a related stadium authority. Before ground can be broken on a stadium, legislation must be approved for public financing, and Major League Baseball must grant approval for the A's to leave Oakland.

Only 30,000?
They are going to spend all of that money and the park is only going to hold 30,000?

How many people do you want it to hold? Most MLB ballparks hold around that number.

No baseball field should ever be built going forward without a retractable roof. Period.

They won’t have a choice in Vegas given the >100 and occasional >110 degree summer months

Looking at the price tag and only 30,000 seats I would assume Vegas knows better.

Think about all the new stadiums however that have gone up and MLB could have prevented any rainouts with all of them simply demanding a retractable roof.

Minnesota Twins needs its head examined.

COVID post-recession. Going to Home Depot and the grocery store is enough to start medicating.

I don't know about that. It appears that this would be the smallest park in the majors by about 5,000 seats.

If the teams or league pays for it, then sure.

Maybe most current MLB parks are too big.

Who upvoted this?

It’s demonstrably false and most people should know that without even having to look anything up.

I was ballparking it.

I guess I was thinking average attendance across MLB (~30k per game for this season)

That stadium will hold 3x the average attendance for an As game this season

Lighten up, Francis. I never said it was a fact that most stadiums held that number, but that it was around that number. I was wrong. The average capacity is closer to 40k. I'll throw myself off the building the next time it happens to protect your fragility.

Go watch the Titans schedule release video, then come talk to me about "most people"
