2001 Mariners won 116 games and lost in the ALCS. Easily the biggest underachieving team ever.

Not only did the 116-win Mariners lose the ALCS but they lost in 5 games.

I am sure they're disappointed to have such a great year and not go far in the playoffs. But to claim that the Giants had a more underachieving year than the Dodgers is a lie and exposes your bias. I might have thought differently if the Dodgers were preparing for the World Series tomorrow, but alas, they're at home just like the Giants.

It’s still pretty wild to me that team won 116 games after losing Griffey and ARod in back to back offseasons

Glossing over that roster now on baseball reference compared to the 01 Yankees, it is downright insane Seattle won 21 more games than them imo

im just stating historical fact. the allies landed at normandy, we declared our independence in 1776, the giants won 107 games and didnt even win a playoff series

Yeah I have a hard time calling a team like the 01 Mariners a historic underachiever because they overachieved by a great deal winning that many games. They had a nice roster but were never expected to be some historic powerhouse

The teams that were very top end payroll with championship expectations preseason and lose in the DS or miss the playoffs really qualify. The Padres this year are a good one, the 2012 Phillies that won like 80 games come to mind

That would be the '93,'97,'98 or 2000 Braves.

'93 lost in NLCS (pre wild card only 2 divisions)

The other teams didn't even make it to the NLCS and all had the best record in the NL I believe.

So the Dodgers were favored to win the World Series all year, had the highest payroll by far, and made an in-season acquisition of two all stars, yet they're not considered underachievers for failing to win the division and make the World Series. But somehow the Giants, a team with a 1% chance to win the NL West at the beginning of year, are underachievers for winning the division and not making the World Series. Seems arse backwards to me.

Yep, that's pretty much it right there.

And I'm still pissed about the check swing call. Sure, maybe he would have gotten out some other way but they should have never made that call.

I saw check swings in the Braves/Dodgers series that were clearly swings, didn't hold up and they were no-calls.

First let me say, you seem massively butthurt.

Secondly, re: the Giants. How many 107-win teams had to play a 106-win team in the LDS?

Gotta suck to spend that much money and not even win your division and you get clowned by a team that spent $120 million less.

just looked it up. the giants are the first team in baseball history to win at least 107 games and not even make the LCS

Just because their pre-season expectations weren't as high doesn't mean they weren't massive underachievers.

yep...they hit the most homers in the league this year right? Just because folks didn't know who half the guys were doesn't mean they weren't talented. You don't luck your way into leading the league in homers, especially playing half your games in that stadium.

The Giants won world series winning 88, 92, and 94 games a few years ago. Their two best seasons since world war 2 were 93 and 2021 (103 and 107 wins) and they didn't make the NLCS either time LOL
