re: Are the 2021 Dodgers the biggest underachievers ever?

The 2019 Twins are the only team to ever win 100+ games in the regular season and get swept in the LDS so I would say it's them. To win 100+ games and not win a single game in the playoffs is inexcusable.

I understand it perfectly.
But this isn't a sport where there are so few games that they fluked their way to a division championship because they got hot for a couple of weeks.
After 162 games they beat out the Dodgers to win the division, beat the Dodgers head-to-head in the regular season (10-9), and set all those league bests and franchise records.
All that to crap out to that same rival in the NLDS.
Just because their pre-season expectations weren't as high doesn't mean they weren't massive underachievers.
Your definition of over/under achievement is based on entering the postseason when I think most people would base achievement on the regular and postseason based on expectations of that team ENTERING the season.
The Dodgers had some injuries but the roster is absolutely loaded still. They lost the division to a ragtag group of Giants and then a ragtag Braves team in the NLCS.

The Dodgers had some injuries

They lost the division to a ragtag group of Giants
quote:its almost like anything can happen once you boil baseball down into a single small sample series and that claiming a season was a massive underachievement all because one team lost is a dumb thing to do
and then a ragtag Braves team in the NLCS.

Entering the season no one would have said the Giants had the potential to win 107 games. That’s my point.

and the idea that this dodger team is somehow an example of a massive underachiever is stupid. thats my point

I don't think they were even the biggest underachiever in their own division in 2021, let alone biggest ever.

2021 Padres didn’t even finish with a winning record

So the Dodgers were favored to win the World Series all year, had the highest payroll by far, and made an in-season acquisition of two all stars, yet they're not considered underachievers for failing to win the division and make the World Series. But somehow the Giants, a team with a 1% chance to win the NL West at the beginning of year, are underachievers for winning the division and not making the World Series. Seems arse backwards to me.

Make it make sense

id argue winning 107 games and not even being able to win a single series is pretty massive underachievement but idk

There are 267 million reasons everyone is laughing at the Dodgers right now
$100 mill of that never saw the field in the playoffs (Kershaw, Bauer, Price). Fact is the Dodgers have drafted or acquired and developed most of their players and their depth of top prospects allowed them to trade for Mookie and Scherzer/ Turner. I would say Mets, Padres and Phillies, given their high payrolls and absence in the playoffs, are bigger under achievers.

Imagine having a roster of
Clayton Kershaw
Walker Buehler
Max Scherzer
Kenley Jansen
Cody Bellinger
Justin Turner
Max Muncy
Trea Turner
Corey Seager
Mookie Betts
and not even making it to the World Series
And I'm not even counting the raper

It will always be the Mariners.

2 of those were hurt and didn't play, 1 was injured during the NLCS and 1 was playing with a bad hip that will require surgery.

The Braves have been missing their best player and one of the most valuable players in all of baseball since early July and arguably their best starter didn’t pitch all year. The Astros number one starter was paid 33 million to not throw a pitch this year due to injury. Their next best starter missed the ALCS and the World Series. The Dodgers injury excuses are hilarious

And you would lose that argument. In order to consider a team over/under achieving, you have to look at expectations. The Giants were predicted to win 74 games and had a 9% chance to make the playoffs. They won 107 games and beat out the Dodgers for the division. That's a massive overachievement. Sure it was a disappointment to lose in the NLDS but it's far from an underachieving season. The Dodgers on the other hand were World Series or bust and couldn't even make it there. That is the definition of underachievement.

Any dodger fan claiming we lost because of injuries is stupid as every team is hurt at this point
But simply naming players on the roster and acting like they were all available and that was the team that lost is just as stupid
