how many people have you seen say this is the most shocking thing that has ever happened to them personally?
Bunch. But i spent too much time on twitter replies.

Saying you're "truly upset" does not mean it affects you more than someone you know, why are you assuming that?
im just assuming that.

I will get downvoted, but I dont care
But this one is bothering me quite a bit. I haven’t stopped thinking about it yet.

in fairness your first comment here was to say, "I don't care"
from my OP

Yes its sad and yes it made me think about my kids when it happened, but nothing much more than that. Kobe was a person on tv for me. I am not going to pretend to be hurting like a family member or friend
Me saying "i dont care" was clearly talking about the downvotes if you read my post at all

I feel like im the opposite of that and everyone else is being edgy.
This is a thread about the reaction to the event. So im not posting this in other threads. The whole point of this thread is discussing the reaction.
Fine. I give in. Im shattered and life will never be the same.

I feel like for someone lecturing about the use of hyperbole, you are using a lot of hyperbole in this thread

I mean it is pretty shocking what happened. Tragic that 9 people passed away with two being just teenagers??
I wouldn't say upset but I'm definitely shocked.
forty one is awfully young to go and you hate to see that happen to anyone just happened he was a celebrity and great former pro basketball player.

My bad, strike that thought from the record.

I had a rough day after hearing the news. But he was a guy I followed for his whole time with the Lakers. The shame to me is that he had really just starting his second part of his life. He had everything he needed and earned every bit of it.

lol. 2 people.
Even if 10% of people are saying that, you and I both know it's hyperbole. No need to let it bother you.

Yeah some guys it seems have a very hard time embracing life after sports. Kobe was relishing his new roles as full time father/basketball ambassador.
Just a shame.
Just a shame.

All in all, I think I feel the same as most in here about Kobe’s death
I guess my true “issue” with some people is how it takes a famous persons death to illicit empathy and sadness

I grew up watching Jordan and then Kobe. Some hoped he would be the next Jordan and although he never surpassed Jordan he was the best player in the league during his prime.
A lot of people grew up looking to Kobe as their inspiration to play basketball. I personally always rooted against the Lakers and rooting against Kobe because I was a Bird/Celtics fan when I was really young.
But this death hit me hard for a couple reasons. Number one it was completely unexpected. A lot of celebrities die doing something stupid like overdosing (Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, etc) or driving recklessly (Paul Walker and Ryan Dunn).
Kobe died taking his 13 year old daughter to a basketball camp.
The other reason his death hit me hard is because he just retired a few years ago. He had the whole second chapter of his life ahead of him. He loved basketball and he loved kids. He was doing a lot of good work with basketball camps and promoting family.
Even though his life on the court was over, his life as an ambassador for the sport was just beginning.

The strange part of this that should make people think is this:
How often have you thought “Kobe has the life. Look at his wealth and fame etc etc”
Now at this moment he would trade all that to be like us, simply alive with his family. That is hopefully the main thing people can take from this. Not how many Instagram likes they can get from putting up “Pray for Puerto Rico” or a French flag Facebook profile pic or a story about how Kobe was their favorite player on NBA2k

I think the majority of the public has their head in the sand, for better or worse, on the everyday tragedy stories. You can pretty easily ignore them. You couldn't really get away from something like the Kobe news.

I guess my true “issue” with some people is how it takes a famous persons death to illicit empathy and sadness
For example, when Heath Ledger died(no clue why, first one that popped into my head) I treated it similarly to the random Mom in Boise Idaho because I have zero connection to him, not even sure I had ever seen a Heath Ledger movie to that point, and if I did I didn't even remember.
But as I pointed out, for many of us, we're very emotionally invested in sports. And a guy like Kobe, we've spent literally 100s of hours watching/discussing. There is a level of investment there, then throw in that he's been a part of our sports lives on the very short list of most famous for over half of our lives.
If it was Mehmet Okur, I just don't think it would have hit me as hard.

quote:I’m with you I don’t get it. Is it because it is the norm for athletes not to be father figures in their kids lives? I would think Kobe expected that of himself and he would be insulted that it’s being made a big deal that he was in his kids lives.
See, what does this mean? He was being a dad. Why is "that so impressive?"
