'll propose another - if Ohio St. played a MAC school instead of Oklahoma and finished 12-1 (while still getting drilled by Iowa), are they in the playoffs over Alabama?
under that scenario I think OSU gets in because of the the extra win and winner of ccg.

That is the problem with big ooc games early in the season. A loss can be the difference in missing the playoff. OU last year and Osu this year.

They still started at the top and stayed there all year, until the loss to Auburn.

When the 1st rankings came out, we were pretty much only playing our starters for the 1st half, and we were looking really good until injuries started to mount up during the LSU game in November.

Ask yourself why, though. Anyone who watched this Alabama team knows that they are not nearly as good as Alabama teams over the last, say, five years

I agree with that, I was just answering the question. If MSU was preseason #1 and went undefeated all the way until the egg bowl, and lost to an ole miss team that somehow ended up in the top 3 after the game...then maybe? Who knows.

But the question in the OP isn't really apples to apples. If MSU went undefeated THIS YEAR until ole miss then lost, then no they probably wouldn't be in. But the ole miss loss would look far worse than bama's loss to AU, not to mention they wouldn't have nearly the poll pull this year that bama did (starting in the 20s and moving up compared to being #1 all year).

Alabama was very good until they lost damn near the entire defense throughout the season. How many will return healthy by the time the playoffs start?

They would have started too far back at the beginning of the season

I don't think this applies anymore since the first ranking doesn't come out until midseason and they start with a clean slate each week.

It’s not the Oklahoma loss, it’s losing by 31 to a 5 loss team. That’s a terrible loss that was the difference.

All but Hootie and Hamilton.

pre season rankings are terrible and are part of the issue with all of this. Don't roll rankings out until November, and move the playoff to 8 teams.

Don't they pretty much already do this? I don't think the 1st ranking is until week 7 or 8.

AP and coaches polls come out preseason. They clearly have an effect on the committee.

They need to start from scratch, not start from the polls.

And if they didn't win the west, it would mean the team that beat them did. Which would be an 11-1 or 12-0 ole miss.

Or at least a 7-1 or 8-0 in conference ole Miss.
Why Ole Miss?

Could be LSU, Bama, Auburn...Just swap MSU/Bama, so make it 11-2 Auburn.

If mississippi state is 11-1 and lost their last game of the year, it would be against ole Miss. 7-1 in conference with tie breakers over LSU, bama, and Auburn. The only team that could go to Atlanta over Mississippi State would be the one team that beat them, which would be ole Miss in this scenario.

Alabama could lose 21 starters and still begin the season in the top 5. The entire system is biased in favor of teams like them.

and at the same time it helps. Ohio state benefited from it last year, without winning their conference

I can't take this hypothetical seriously when ole Miss goes to the sec championship game.

Teams that reload with 5 star talent and rarely lose games? Yeah what a bias

I don't know that I'd say we "benefited" from it.

It's been proven that many of these "5-star recruits" get extra stars if brand name schools are recruiting them. So yeah, it's biased.
