If an SEC West team went 11-1, lost their final game and missed the championship game

BUT

That SEC West team was Mississippi State...

Would they be in the playoffs?

No.

As much as people don't like it, they're Alabama. It's worth something. I hate it, but it's just how it is. Their coach is the goat and they have more talent than anyone.

Live with it and hope Clemson whoops that arse.

If they lost their last game and didn't win the west, it would likely mean ole Miss was going to Atlanta.

I can't take this hypothetical seriously when ole Miss goes to the sec championship game.

Under the exact same circumstances that happened this year? Maybe.

I don't think they make it in.

Alabama gets the benefit of the doubt because of legacy.

If it was Mississippi State, then that means they would have beaten LSU (I know, they lost to Troy, but it would still be a quality win), Auburn, and Bama. I think that resume would be enough to get them in under this scenario moreso than Bama's resume this year.

Doubtful, especially over Ohio State

I'll propose another - if Ohio St. played a MAC school instead of Oklahoma and finished 12-1 (while still getting drilled by Iowa), are they in the playoffs over Alabama?

And if they didn't win the west, it would mean the team that beat them did. Which would be an 11-1 or 12-0 ole miss.

Or at least a 7-1 or 8-0 in conference ole Miss.

They would have started too far back at the beginning of the season. The truth is there are only a handful of teams that can make it to the playoffs every year without going undefeated. Bama starts at 1-2. So when they lose a game, they only drop to 5-6. Mississippi State starts unranked. So when they claw their way up, one loss and they’ll drop 12-13 spots. Happens every year.

I'm not hating and I get your point. But how the hell is that playoff criteria?

I mean, if they said Alabama makes the playoffs over Wisconsin because Nick Saban > Paul Chryst, then there needs to be an investigation.

the thing is...they've said all along they want "the 4 best teams". Bama was the undisputed #1 team (in the polls anyway) the entire season. Their last loss was to an AU team that catapulted up to the top 3.

MSU wouldn't be ranked #1 preseason adn throughout the entire a year, a loss to ole miss wouldn't really look as good as bama's.

It's the same reason UCF isn't given even a serious consideration for the playoff.

It's silly, but how you perform the year prior impacts if you can make the playoff for this season.

Ask yourself why, though. Anyone who watched this Alabama team knows that they are not nearly as good as Alabama teams over the last, say, five years. They still started at the top and stayed there all year, until the loss to Auburn.

Mississippi State was #1 in the very first playoff rankings in 2014. And Ole Miss was also in the top 4 I believe... so had this scenario somehow played out that year, and Mississippi State had finished 11-1, they probably would have made it in over a 2-loss conference champ.

No guarantee though.
