The more they dig, the more they find.

Former Iowa player Reggie Bracy, now at Troy, made 66 wagers on sporting events while underage, including two on Iowa games in which he played last season -- Michigan and South Dakota State, per an affidavit filed in Johnson County, Iowa.

Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock, three other starters charged in state's gambling investigation

Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock has been charged with tampering with records as part of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s gambling probe, according to court records.
Brock was the Cyclones’ leading rusher a year ago but has been held out of practice this fall due to an undisclosed reason.

The bets against their team were a reverse jinx.

besides the fact that this is illegal, it hurts because as sports fans, most of us have the belief that sports are free from internal corruption/tampering/influence. at the very least, we didn't have much hard evidence that it existed before this (besides the tim donghagy NBA scandal). yeah, we always b*tch that refs are paid off or certain games are rigged, but I don't know if anyone SERIOUSLY believed that
but the potential for this thing to go completely haywire is insane, and it could lead to absolutely devastating consequences

This stuff is going to continue.
Used to you had to either go to Vegas to bet (which was a hassle)
Or
Use a bookie (which was less likely to be easily tracked).
Now that widespread betting is legal online, these stories are just getting started.

No one should be surprised by this
The hell people think were going to happen.

Especially when some players are seeing teammates make big time NIL money for the same work they’re putting in.

I'm guessing Kirk Ferentiz is lining up for the end-of-year fired bus?

Wut?
This has been going for over 100 years with hard evidence ranging across all sports.

i shoulda clarified. in major CFB, to my knowledge anyways, there hasn't been any hard evidence (corruption/internal influence/tampering) which has been proven that the outcomes of games have been influenced by those directly involved in them (players, coaches, refs, NCAA, etc)
i'm not talking about PED usage, or using money/gifts to lure players to a team before NIL. I'm talking, someone who has the direct capability to influence or alter a game has never (to my knowledge) been proven to do so in CFB

Widespread availability of sports gambling is going to damage a lot of sports.

I don’t think so. This is still fairly new. These chumps will be made an example of and I doubt it happens often, outside of one off situations.

you don't think that some people with malicious intent will be able to persuade a WR who isn't projected to have a productive NFL career to drop a couple easy passes in a nat'l title game for $1M (whether it's cash/bitcoin), and thereby significantly affecting a game? or a kicker to miss any potential game winning FGs?
hell, half of our gov't has sold out to foreign and global interests (not trying to go off on a tangent). something as meaningless as sports would DEFINITELY be prone to that, as much as we all hate to think about it
