"Lady, you want $7 for a used Kenny Loggins record? I'll give you five"
"No, he signed it himself"
"....Ok I'll give you four"

Local WAFB Channel 9 did a music montage for LSU’s first two rounds of the 1986 NCAAT with Morris Day and the Time’s “Color of Success”. I used to have it recorded on VHS.

Amazing how yacht rock dominated. You had the wrong year, brotha. I remember this only because I relate Darrell Griffith to that song in my head. This is the first title game that I remember. I'm too lazy to transcribe it, but Bryant Gumbel's late plug at about 1:33:12 is incredible. Larry Brown with his head in his hands and crying UCLA girl put it over the top.

Try the 1980 NCAA UCLA-Louisville end. That's the Kenny Loggins bit (background vocals by Michael McDonald and pre-Today Show host Bryant Gumbel as the pregame and postgame host for NBC).

Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald performing "This is It" live.
Good stuff. 2 dudes who are good friends and comfortable with their own masculinity.

Iowa and Purdue in Indianapolis.

Wow, that I had no idea. I always rip Purdue and Iowa as the chokers in the conference who have underachieved more than anyone in the tournament. I thought this was interesting.
quote:
Structurally speaking, this was the 1st tournament of the modern era.[1] For the first time:
An unlimited number of at-large teams could come from any conference. (From 1975 to 1979, conferences were only allowed 1 at-large entry.)
The bracket was seeded to make each region as evenly competitive as possible. (Previously, geographic considerations had trumped this.)
All teams were seeded solely based on the subjective judgment of the committee. (In 1979, seeding was also partially based on the prior performance of a conference winner's conference.)
In the 2nd year the tournament field was seeded, no #1 seed reached the Final 4. This would not happen again until 2006 and also occurred in 2011.
UCLA would forfeit its second place in the standings in 1981 after players representing the school were declared ineligible by the NCAA.[2]

To be fair to you, neither Iowa nor Purdue has been back to the Final Four since. So you’re not really wrong.
BTW, Lute Olsen coached Iowa to that Final Four. Purdue and Iowa actually played each other in the third-place game.

Think the words "Road to Albuquerque" has been used again for an NCAA Tournament?
Crazy to think they had a Final 4 there.

About 4 years before that, they held it in Salt Lake City, which became a staple site for the first two rounds of the tournament for years after that.
The Superdome hosting it in 1982 was the gradual beginning of the dome era of the Final Four. There were smaller venues mixed in over the next 15-20 years but the domes slowly started to take it over. Saw the ‘03 final in the Superdome and my free terrace section seat is probably the worst seat I’ve ever had for a basketball game.
