This proves my point that Andruw should be in the Hall

Gold gloves mean little, that is more of a popularity contest until recent advanced defensive metrics came out recently. I mean trick Jeter has a ton of them and he hasn't been the best defensive player at SS

If Andruw Jones is inducted into the HoF while Dale Murphy remains watching from the outside, it would be the biggest, in-funniest practical joke ever.

Did you see him play? That is what matters.

He was the best and most consistent defensive player period over that decade. No one sustains that. Griffey Jr comes to mind but he battled injuries.

Defensive Gold Gloves may not matter much but oly crap this guy was a highlight real every single night.

LOL at trying to compare Andruw's defensive worth to fricking Jeter. GTFO.

Jim Edmonds was making highlight plays all the time as well.... Doesn't make him a great defensive center fielder....

Jones was done as a regular player at 30 and hasnt had more than 300 AB since 07. That will count again him...

Of an I didn't compare him defensively to Jeter for the reading challenged, I used Jeter as an example to show how biased Gold Gloves can be.

Murphy will get in before him no doubt.. and Andruw aint getting in for a long time if ever..

But I'd love to see a player of Andruw's caliber and prime today. A guy who hits 40-50 bombs a season and man's the frick out of the outfield. Where are these guys?

Defense matters a lot. However, I'm not going over compensate for it.

Gold gloves aside, the metrics support that he's probably the 2nd or 3rd best defensive center fielder of ALL TIME. BUT ZOMG he's FAT!!!!

I haven't used the "fat" argument.

He has one set of great numbers. That's wonderful, but TO ME, that's not HOF worthy.

At any point in his career, did you get the impression that he was the best OVERALL CF in the game?

Except when you compare him to his peers.

And that's where Jones falls short.

was waiting for the classic jim edmonds argument to be brought in.

and lol he was no andruw for a decade.

andruw the youngest mother fricker to hit a home run in a world series game of all time.. and he did it twice.

Is JIM EDMONDS SNIFFING 500 HOMERUNS ANY TIME SOON?

It's a combination of Power AND Defense.

Hmm.

Again Andruw is only 35 years old.
Both have played 17 seasons so it's equal time frame yet Andruw is still only 35 fricking years old bro.

Andruw 431 Homers and counting for this season..

Edmonds 393 Homers

Andruw also has more all-star appearances.

Lets just see how this all unfolds first.

Not that is matters.. Andruw nearly has 100 more stolen bases than Edmonds.. as well as more RBI's.. He has 10 straight seasons of 80+ RBI's.

And both of those guys made highlight plays because they were often out of position when the ball was hit and they HAD to make those plays.

People forget this in their evaluation of Jones and Edmonds. I contend (and I think that you agree with me) that those guys' defense is very over rated because of this.

7 time All Star.

5 Gold Gloves.

4 Silver Sluggers.

Back-to-back MVPs.

Was a 30-30 guy back when that actually meant something.

Probably the best player of the 1980's.

Bryce Harper will become the youngest this year do youngest to hit a home run in WS is more of a novelty than a HOF moment.

Edmonds 132 + OPS
Jones 112 + OPS

Jones 60.3 WAR
Edmonds 57.3 WAR

Edmonds admitted he tried to make the highlight play back in day by charging late or making a catch look more difficult than it was.

All defensive metrics do rate Jones highly and he was a great defensive player. However, being done as a regular at 30 I don't think he gets in. He is 69 away from 500 however I don't think 500 is an automatic HOF berth anymore either.

for about a 10 year stretch, yes, he was considered to be the BEST center fielder in baseball

while jim edmonds was making diving catches and showing up on web gems, andruw was making that exact same catch look effortless

He had the best first step and ability to see the ball of the bat of nearly anyone...ever. He has the 2nd highest defensive WAR for active players and is 19th in career defensive WAR. He is #1 all time among not only center fielders but also all outfielders in total zone runs

The defensive metrics back it up. It's really a no brainer
