It's sad because it's such a money grab for the travel orgs. They know damn good and well there are probably less than 10 guys in the state each year that need to step up to national competition. The rest would be just fine playing legion.

Eh, it's probably more than that. But the combo of good baseball and respresenting the Legions was a good time with a finite ending, not 600 different world series to choose from.

In South Louisiana it is dead. It is a shame, because with combined high schools and college freshman returning to play, it was a higher level of baseball than average high school games.

High school coaches killed it… they just saw innings and at-bats that kids they weren’t coaching the next season would take up

They could tweak the schedule so kids could play on weekend travel teams. That wasn’t the issue.

This... Legion baseball was probably what I enjoyed the most. EVERY game mattered.

He could indeed, lol. There were plenty of kids committed to smaller schools like Lamar, Southeastern, UNCW, VMI, etc but I never did hear any SEC commits. So it's obviously a slight level below.

Showcase ball is not helping, but apparently there were also issues with the legion organization down here, that the HS coaches did not want to deal with.

There is the Crescent City League now, but it’s not the same

I played on a team from Farmerville my 2nd year of college. We had three guys that were already playing college ball on the team. Roger Crow was or coach. Reuben Tatum was our ace. He was on the NLU team too. An infielder from Marion played at a small Arkansas college, and another guy was playing at a Juco. At least half the other guys on the team were trying to play at some college level.

I remember playing Bernice, Springhill, Jonesboro, either Haynesville or Junction City. This was either 1978 or 1979. Surely they had teams in Monroe and Ruston, but we didn't play them. I hadn't played since Pony League before my sophomore year of high school.

that would be true but the colleges dont scout legion. in the end, that is all travel ball in HS is about, period. and frankly they only go to max 7 or 8 events for travel too.

now all the little local HS teams in south LA, that aint much different than legion but coaches are not giving that up as those are fundraisers for them or the school teams and they require kids to play...i say required because if you dont play any there is a good chance you dont make the team next year.

now studs are allowed to play wherever.

yea and most of the HS teams just play in 2d tournaments in south la. only the stud kids or older kids looking for an offer immediately go do the big travel orgs.

Legion ball was fun. Was definitely like an all star team and higher level than HS.
