Am I the only one who fricking hated the fall downs at the end of the game?

I hate the strategy to begin with—if you’re winning by 1 or especially 2 or more, the things that would have to go wrong for you to lose at that point if you go ahead and score and add 7 points to your lead seem way less likely than a fumbled snap and turnover. But whatever.
However, in last night’s situation, the game was fricking tied with under 2 minutes to go and Philly having no timeouts and a QB without the huge arm to lead a typical, end-of-game, 75-yard TD unless your DBs slipped and let somebody get loose. Which was possible, I guess, on that field. But was also why I thought it was a terrible decision to play for the FG (even though it wound up working out). KC’s kicker had slipped at least twice already—once on the missed FG and another on the kickoff—and they were putting him on the slickest part of the field, right in the paint.
Again, it worked out, but at the time, in a tie game, I thought it was a bad decision. Unless they were scared Philly would go for 2 and the win if they miraculously went down the field and scored, but I doubt that was in Reid’s thought process since that’s more of a college move than an NFL one. Especially in the Super Bowl.

Sorry you hate common sense

It was a smart decision.
Score a TD and there's little chance you lose.
Kill the clock and kick a FG and there's an almost zero chance you lose.

It’s called Securing Victory…..

I hated the decision because it took the excitement out of the ending but it was 100% the smart move. The game result for KC hinged on a short XP rather than their defense in a 2 minute drill.

and kick a FG
My main point is that this was not a given on that field last night.

in regulation
If they were up by 1, sure. But tied, I think you score the TD. It wound up working, so I doubt I’ll have many supporters with benefit of hindsight, but in the moment, I thought it was a bad call.

I'll bet you hated Dean Smith and his Four Corners offense.

Well you thought wrong. Both the metrics and conventional wisdom back up what the Chiefs did, even if they ultimately missed the FG.

Was he running that in tie games or with the lead?
I don’t like it to begin with, but will concede that that’s my old-man-ness and that the metrics (slightly) disagree.
But again, my main point is that the metrics don’t account for the slipperiness of that particular field on that particular night.

Didn’t see anyone slip on one of the many extra points and field goals attempted in the game

Take a knee son. Horrendous take.

So let’s say he does slip. Eagles still have like 8 seconds to drive the field if nothing crazy happens after slipping.

Kickers were 11/12 last night with the only miss being a doink off the upright

You thought wrong. In the modern NFL, you need to operate under the assumption that most offenses can get downfield in a two minute drill because they can.
Honestly, if KC had scored a touchdown with 1:45 left, they were more likely to lose 43-42 than win.

Yeah, it wouldn't have been miraculous. Offenses are WAY better than defenses in a two minute drill.

You realize the Eagles were trying to let him score, right?
Posted on 2/13/23 at 8:54 am to Hot Carl
Kind of sucked the fun out of the game for the fans, BUT absolutely the right strategy to secure victory.

Agreed. It was lame as hell when the KC ball carrier avoided scoring a touchdown to burn time and setup a field goal.
Who the hell dreams of NOT scoring the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl?!
For viewers, it must’ve been hell to explain that to casual fans watching at parties.

Yes, and I also realize I’m on an island here. But I’m also not dying on this hill, just wanted to talk about something other than the penalty.

I mean as a casual fan thats not how you want it to end. But i get it. I think the Saints were looking to do the same thing at the end of the 2018 NFCCG. Id be much more elated if it were my team securing victory
