Because if you miss- 5 points down means nothing. But if you make,only 3 down- you can tie with a FG. Very simple to figure out.

The counter argument to that is that if you are down by four and you score again, you are up by 3 instead of 2.

That's how Briles has been playing all game. Going for it on 4th down pretty much any spot on the field. Going for two (which I agreed with).
Usually I don't like that type of football, but in a game like this, you almost have to.
