Airfare + Hotels are currently very reasonable for dates of Tokyo Olympics. Would you go?

I was doing some research and airfare to Tokyo and nice hotels in Tokyo around the venues for the new dates of the Summer Olympics are super reasonable compared to the insane prices this time last year before the original scheduled dates..

Going to the Olympics has always been on my sports fan bucket list and I always thought Tokyo would be an incredible experience for them.

Would any of you consider to start planning a trip - taking the gamble that it will be: A) Safe and B) Spectators will be allowed to attend events and tickets will be accessible OR am I just incredibly stupid?

Unless Tokyo is on your list of places to go in the world, I would hold off. There’s a chance spectators can’t go and if that’s the only thing you wanted to go see you’re better off waiting until they come to Los Angeles.

If you do plan on going, give yourself plenty of time to do things outside of the Olympics. The fanfare is nice but overwhelming at times and a majority of the host cities have so much to offer. I went to Rio in 2016 and wanted to go to Japan in 2020 but then the world went to shite!

For sure. Especially with how forgiving airlines have become now with flight refunds and credits and change fees. Just make sure as much as you can book is either refundable by cash or credit.

eta: If you dont mind, let me know what type of deals you are seeing. My wife and I were planning to go to Japan sometime this year to visit family and were planning to avoid the olympics timeframe, but would consider going then if it isnt too bad.

Tokyo is absolutely number one on my bucket list.

My brother in law attended a conference in Yokohama which is in the southern part of the metropolis, and when they took a taxi from Narita Airport located in the north of the metropolis, it was an hour and a half ride that traversed through Tokyo in which he says that he was looking at thick urban landscape for the whole 90 minute ride.

My youngest son has lived for 3+ yrs now & he's saying the biggest issue is that Japan requires a 2 week quarantine upon arrival, the same applies in landing in the U.S. from Japan. So, as things stand now, you are looking at a mth of sitting around & twiddling your thumbs. IN Japan, that is 2 very very long weeks.

I'm going. Worst case scenario is that capacity is so low for each event that you can only watch a handful live, in which case you're still in Tokyo so it's still an awesome trip.

Key is that the current restrictions, which post 12/31 are effectively the highest in the world (i.e. no non-cotizens), have to be relaxed by a few levels.

Hong Kong requires 3 weeks now. They even put on the immigration website that there is no evidence 21 is any better than 14. Just because.

I've always wanted to go to Tokyo and I've always wanted to attend the Olympics, so early 2020 I was trying to research some way I could go even despite the absurd costs but then covid made all that a waste of time

I'm not going to try to plan anything with so much uncertainty about spectators being allowed and possibly having to quarantine upon arrival. I'll try to attend another Olympics and go to Tokyo some other year. Probably better that way anyway since I can probably get a true Tokyo experience when the Olympics aren't there, and I've been to L.A. many times so I can just focus on the Olympics in 2028 when they host and not have to worry about trying to take in a new city since I've already done the touristy shite in L.A. Plus if I still have friends in and around L.A. by then I might be able to swing not paying for a hotel while I'm there which would be huge

I would love to go to Tokyo/Japan. I wouldn’t be going for the Olympics. I’d go to see Tokyo, then head north for some of their amazing Pow.

I’ve always been curious as to how they enforce the quarantine. I get how they can do it if your going to Japan, and book a hotel, but how would the US enforce that when you get back home?

This is all very helpful. I hadn’t looked into quarantine restrictions at all. That is definitely a major issue at the moment - as I wanted to go for 14 days total (including my travel days).

I just saw airfare for $1,200 round trip (a little more than double that for premium economy) and saw luxury hotels in good locations for under $150 a night.

Might start booking anyways and see what happens.
