Galen Rupp

I’ve been running a lot of shorter distances/intervals during covid for a challenge. I’ve gotten my 400/quarter down to 71 seconds and feel like I’m fricking flying/want to vomit at 39 years old
The thought of that pace he ran for 3 miles is completely unfathomable.

quote:to put this in perspective I was a d1 distance runner (very mediocre d1 distance runner (zappes was much better) but still). One meet at McNeese I doubled a 1500 and 3k (11.25 laps of work, neither of those races were anywhere near that pace) and got stuck in a B team 4x400 after just ducking around. Split :60 I think. This mother fricker held that for 12.5 laps. Just blows my mind.

ETA: meant to say Galen is focusing on marathon instead of 5k/10k

What years were you at McNeese? I think you're a little older than me so you may have counted my laps on that sketchy arse track of yours

That is an average speed of 21.717 feet per second
or
14.8 miles per hour over the 755.36 seconds.
Another way to look at it is that he ran FIFTY straight 100 meter sprints in 15.1 seconds each. That is about 75% of an average high school sprinter's top speed for over 12 and a half minutes.

What percentage of regular people could even do that?

Dang, I ran a 7:30 mile today and I was excited about it. Props to that guy

You have a few names making noise there.
Karissa Schweizer has had some big races this summer (after setting the indoor 3k record this winter)
Molly seidel qualifyied for tokoyo in her first marathon at the trials earlier this year
And then Colleen Quigley and Courtney Frerichs doing work in the steeple.
All of the above minus molly huddle train with the Bowerman track club. They’re poised to fill in the gab made by the takedown of Oregon project.

I rather run a half marathon again than do a full sprint 400.
