Future success has zero to do with how great a college team was… this could be a good thread but you started it all wrong.

Nebraska starting 11 would be thrown out for targeting.

This has absolutely nothing to do with a college matchup. Nothing

Yet, that is the only reason 2001 Miami is talked about as one of the best ever. They were pedestrian in college compared to other national championship teams

Whats your issue?

Their season was not that great or dominant

One issue is that Miami’s offense in 2001 looks like it’s from the Stone Age. That’s just the era they were in though. Teams with elite talent have made a ton of strides in scheme the past decade or so (plus some rule changes)

A little before my time but I just checked their box scores and I’m seeing only 2 close games. 18-7 @Boston College and 26-24 @Virginia Tech. The latter of which, the Canes led 26-10 in the 4th

I’m not seeing pedestrian

Here you go on their season

Penn state—33-7
Rutgers—61-0
Pitt—43-21
Troy state—38-7
#15 FSU—49-27
WVU—45-3
Temple—38-0
#21 BC—18-7
#14 Syracuse—59-0
#19 Washington—65-7
#18 Va Tech—26-24
#8 Nebraska—37-14

Zero top 5 wins and only one top 10 win. Couple that with two very close games against teams ranked outside the top 15

That isn’t an elite season as a college unit at all

Compared to national title teams? They have one top 10 win and very close games against two teams outside the top 15

3 of the last 4 national champs have far better seasons alone

Lol. LSU would roll Nebraska with whatever rules you want.

I don't think there was enough significant change in the rules to make much difference. It's really more of a style of play issue. Nebraska dominated with size and strength in an era were offensive football was still very much a traditional "pro style" offense. QB mostly under center I-formation, TEs always on the line, fullbacks, etc.

If those Nebraska teams had to face modern offenses, not just LSU, I don't know how much success they would have. Maybe the most glaring evidence of that being true is that Nebraska hasn't been a powerhouse since 2001. The game, particularly offenses, evolved to essentially neutralize Nebraska's advantage. Hell, I think SEVERAL 2019 teams could have beaten 1995 if that game were played today. You watch college football today compare with 1995 and it looks like a very different game offensively.

Well I was replying originally to the comment another poster said about 95 Nebraska in particular. 2001 Miami is a different story
