Andruw Jones >>>>>>>> Jim Edmonds

Yes. I hate Jim Edmonds.
He was the ultimate "manufacture a highlight" guy.

Jim Edmonds made multiple catches in his career that were better than the WM catch.
Most of Jim Edmonds spectacular plays came from the fact that he had to make up for his range and poor routes. Edmonds was a good defensive center fielder, but he was nowhere near Mays. Center Fielders like Willie Mays and Andruw Jones lacked the spectacular plays because they had ridiculously good range.

Willie mays catch was in the 8th inning of a 2-2 world series game. /thread.
Edmonds has made some incredible catches in his career, no doubt. But the circumstances around mays catch are what make it so amazing.

theunknownknight Yes...TEN TIMES better. Really...TEN TIMES
I guess ran at 200 mph and jumped 15 feet off the ground, spun 10 times, and threw the ball back at 800 mph. WOW!!! That gif really does the catch some injustice.

Also, he was in shallow field and ran all the way to the back of the Polo Grounds to make the Catch.
I can't find the exact math (yet) but the distance he traveled, in such a short amount of time, to make the Catch is absurd.

So then circumstantially, it was a great catch...but compared to others, its just ok. I can live with that.

You see that "404" on the center field wall in the Edmonds catch you posted? Willie Mays catch would have been about 16 feet beyond that. That's what makes it special.

if mays makes that catch and throw in may, nobody remembers it like they do now.

No.
The CF wall was 483 feet. The bleachers in Right center were between 450-460.
Willie started in about as shallow as Edmonds' on his great catch, then ran about 50-60 feet more barreling toward a brick wall, never slowing until he caught the ball.
More info here: LINK
That's a pretty good book, too.
Willie would pat his glove any time the ball was in the air and he knew he could catch it. He pat his glove before this catch.
There's a lot of things about Mays' catch that make it better than anything Edmonds ever did.

Because Jim Edmonds never made a catch as good as the one Willie Mays made.
Jim Edmonds catch was better than Mays. It's really not even close.

He is. That guy is dumb

The most overused statement on the internet. It's really not even close.

sure change the subject. that's what people who are wrong tend to do.

catches in april are no where near the level of catches in the world series.
Posted on 4/16/13 at 2:25 pm to bbap
Well part of the lore of mays catch was happened ib world series. Lots of plays in every sport are made in every sports regular season but when it happens in finals it gets more lore because of the circumstance.
Homeruns are hit every day abd some monster shots...but if you did best homerun ever I'm sure it would come from post season.
Think of the amazing 1 hand football catches you see...then look how simple "the catch" was
What one gets mentioned as all time geeat catch

Wertz worked the count to two balls and a strike before crushing Liddle's fourth pitch approximately 420 feet to deep center field. In many stadiums the hit would have been a home run and given the Indians a 5-2 lead. However, this was the spacious Polo Grounds, and Giants center fielder Willie Mays, who was playing in shallow center field, made an on-the-run over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track to make the out.

i'll rephrase then since the significance of the catches seem to be hanging some up.
edmonds catch was much harder than mays.

You are being silly in your incorrectness on this.
You can clearly see the 400 ft. sign in Edmonds catch.
He started at the same depth as Willie, ran probably half as far, then had to dive to actually catch the ball...
None of this to talk about game (World Series vs. Regular season game), double play (Mays wheeled and threw a guy out), etc.
So you are right, the plays aren't remotely close. Jim Edmonds couldn't hold Willie Mays' jock in CF.
