but none of it changes the fact that diving straight at the wall and looking up is harder than running backwards and looking up.
You are way exaggerating his dive and simplifying Willie's "running and looking backward."
Willie ran, almost into the wall, on harder hit ball in a bigger park... longer distance.
Edmonds ran, dove about 6-8 feet short of the wall (absolutely zero chance he would hit it) and made a great catch. I don't think Edmonds himself thought he was going to catch it, judging by his reaction. He threw his glove out there and the ball landed in it, which is impressive.
Mays caught the ball in the shadow of a brickwall, running full speed right at it, somewhere between 420-455 feet deep (20-55 feet deeper than Edmonds' would have even had to run), and then caught the ball at the wall (as opposed to diving 6-8 feet before it).
I guess you think diving is a lot more complicated than I do.

I've said for years that was the greatest catch I've ever seen (in baseball). The greatest play I've ever seen was either Brooks Robinson going 30 feet past 3rd base and throwing a guy out, or Ozzie Smith's diving play.
Brooks Robinson Play
Ozzie Smith, it is the 2nd play

diving to the left or right isnt the hardest thing ever but diving straight away from home plate, yes thats extremely hard.

If anyone even brings up the Jeter foul ball catch where he caught the ball then ran half a mile and dove into the stands, I will kill kittens.

ha yeah that one is the worst.
best catch of all time was manny ramirez cutting off a ball from the centerfielder a good 300 feet from home plate.

the final catch was swell, but he had to run that down because of the horrible angle and jump he got on the ball.

And Edmonds was great at slowing down to make a catch look better than it was. Hollywood at its finest.
THIS!
Also, the Willie Mays catch is special because the ball came right over his head.

I know I'm 4 pages late to this party, but I just wanted to point out that every single word in the OP is dead on balls accurate.
