I love that your link calls it the greatest play ever made because its not even close. Ever seen Ozzie dive up the middle and bare hand a grounder and throw the guy out...That could be considered the greatest play. It may not be but it sure is up there.

Take a gander

Unreal!

i'll rephrase then since the significance of the catches seem to be hanging some up.

edmonds catch was much harder than mays.

This. Who cares about significance or situation. We are talking strictly about the catch...or at least me, bbap and others are.

My guess is further than 420. The dimensions are well documented.

Wikipedia lists it at 455 ft. left of the bullpen curve, which is right where Willie caught the ball, a couple feet short of the wall.

Willie Mays would have been able to catch the ball the Edmonds caught, Edmonds would not have been able to make Mays' catch. Edmonds plays looked better, because he took poor/slow routes. Mays made everything look easy.

You would go Braves but even this is way better than Willie's.

ETA: that "video" is awful

I can't watch the video. Is it the one from San Diego where the ball hit the pebble and bounced up? That's one of my favorite plays to watch ever.

well i dont disagree with any of that except edmonds taking poor routes. but none of it changes the fact that diving straight at the wall and looking up is harder than running backwards and looking up. edmonds catch itself was definitely harder.

Could be. I was just going by what that link said. Either way it was DEEP. Look at that f'n place:

So for your argument you aren't factoring in distance traveled to make the catch as part of the whole catch? I'm not saying you're wrong either way, just trying to understand your argument.

Edmonds wasn't a bad defender, he had the athleticism to make up for his poor routes. Overall, he had very good defensive metrics, just nowhere near Mays' level.

i guess him running his arse off is really the only impressive part of the entire play. the catch itself was pretty easy.

WM is at the warning track

That distance marker reads 483. the center field corners were well under 460

WM traveled further, in a way more important game, ran faster, and hit a cutoff man with a spinning throw to hold up runners in a 2-2 game in the 8th inning

I dont think anyone said it was. Saying his catch was tougher isnt saying he was a better centerfielder.

You dont see anyone claiming glen allen hill is a better hitter than barry bonds because his longest homerun went farther (im not sure if this is even a true statement, just an example).

Polo Grounds were ridiculous, no park has ever came close to it. The White Sox originally proposed a park that came very close to the Polo Grounds before building US Cellular Field.

And Edmonds was great at slowing down to make a catch look better than it was. Hollywood at its finest.
