Random question - how much do they get paid? I know it's diddly poo, but is it the same flat rate across the league or is it team to team? Can you imagine if they unionized? That would probably be the end of them and nobody would care.

People since then have given different reasons for kneeling or declined comment. The kneeling evolved after Trump got involved. Instead of kneeling for policy brutality, it was to show opposition to Trump. So, if you are going to try to make a statement, elaborate on what you are doing. You will have a lot better chance at bringing whatever change you are looking for by actually talking about it when presented with the opportunity.
