I wish the NHL had made an expansion announcement in the 2 break just to extend the interest and sell season tickets in Houston

I had some business dealings with a subsidiary of his around 10 years ago. He was in preliminary negotiations to buy the Rockets at the time, and one of his top guys let it be known that whole deal was a long game for him to get an NHL (the Phoenix Coyotes at the time) franchise in Houston.

I think he is a lock in the next round of expansion.

It wasnt that he was saying the NHL is a bigger brand (which it is obviously not) but that the NHL players were doing things the right way in relation to the NBA optics that players are more about themselves than the game as a whole.

I don't think it is debatable that the pride in the game of the NHL players is on an entirely different level than any other sport. I mean, this tournament is their version of an All-Star game or Pro Bowl and its bigger than the league itself at the moment and the Saturday hockey game blew away the NBA weekend in terms of social media influence (whatever that means)

He is dead on with these comments.

As I mentioned on another thread when I still worked for the County we were doing the negotiations for improvements and upgrades to Toyota Center and Tillman paid for the improvement to allow for hockey out of his own pocket

No need to make a separate thread about this so I'm going to post this here. The NHL lost a legend last night. Mike Lange, the HoF voice of the Penguins, passed away last night at 76. He was the voice of the Pens on both radio and TV(more the former) for over 50 years.

This one hurts. A lot. Sad day for Pens fans everywhere and for Western/SW PA. RIP Mike.

"Elvis has just left the building!"

Go scratch St.Peter's back with a hacksaw, Mike. You will be missed.

HoF voice of Penguins dies at 76.

The longtime voice of hockey in Pittsburgh has gone silent.

Mike Lange, the play-by-play man for the Pittsburgh Penguins for nearly five decades, died Wednesday at age 76.

There was no immediate word on the cause of death, but health issues had been the primary reason he left the broadcast booth.

Lange, a native of Sacramento, joined the Penguins in 1974, after a stint with the San Diego Gulls of the Western Hockey League.

He left the team after one season because it was in bankruptcy and called Washington Diplomats soccer games, but returned for the 1976-77 season and never left again.

Lange became renowned both locally and around the hockey world for his creative goal calls and sayings, including “Buy Sam a drink and get his dog one, too,” “He’s smiling like a butcher’s dog,” and, after the Penguins had secured a victory, “Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has just left the building.”

Until the arrival of Mario Lemieux in 1984, Lange was probably the most popular member of the organization, and he is credited with keeping interest in pro hockey alive here when the Penguins weren’t doing a very good job of that.

In 2019, the Penguins honored Lange by naming the media level (press box) after him. They also had a pregame ceremony recognizing his contributions to the organization a few months after he retired

McDonough on the call. Solid. Surprised I can't get this on CBC. They must have pushed it to their cable network.
