It all depends on how the rest plays out. I would not think they control their own destiny.

Of course we have no idea since there are no quantifiable metrics for the selection process.

Here' another question: what about undefeated Cincinnati or Penn State? Would either have a shot? Cinci would need to beat Ohio State.

Kige this. They have tOSU which is a winnable game if they show the chest.

Bump for a weekly update. #20 in this weeks poll. Anybody changed their opinion if BYU can make the 4 team playoff? BYU plays 2-2 Utah St this week. They should win that game and then would play @UCF. Im still saying think that they pass the eyeball test. They play as physical as any team in the country.

There's a very big reason they are not in the Pac.

This has been discussed Ad nauseum.

0% chance they win the playoffs.
12.5% chance they make it to the playoffs.

They wouldn't have earned a spot with that schedule imo, too few ranked teams.

No. There is a 0% chance they make the playoff.

They'd have to settle for one of the six major bowls if they go undefeated (which they won't).

Never underestimate the power of bad decision making in the CFB Playoff. All these people who got the BCS destroyed are going to be wishing they had it back when this committee starts making politically charged decisions.

why has the Big 12 not added BYU yet?

religious reasons.

It's the PAC-12 that doesn't want religious schools.

The Big 12 has TCU and Baylor (how "religious" they really are is debatable).

The problems with adding BYU are that now you have 1) an 11-team conference (though that worked OK for the Big 10 for many years) and 2) two schools geographically isolated from the rest of the conference (BYU and West Virginia). If you add a western school (say Colorado State) you leave West Virginia by itself; if you add an eastern school (say Cincinnati) then BYU is isolated.

If BYU goes unbeaten they will have a legitimate complaint to be in the CFB.

Beating Texas, Cal, and Boise is enough to make the playoffs? The rest of their schedule is sub Top 25, which is being generous.

Its like they got a conference schedule without any of the powerhouse teams on it, just mid season filler.

They will be unbeaten and have a legitimate complaint. The goal is to find a National Champion, not the best team. They will have done what was asked to do and won all their games.

I think people are confusing that National Champion does not always mean best team. And best team is a subjective argument.

It would set a very bad precedent. Notre Dame, for example, would have zero incentives to play a challenging schedule.

Notre Dame is locked into playing 5 ACC, Navy, Army, and USC. So that to me is a bad example.

But people bitched about Notre Dame getting in 2 years ago when they clearly deserved the chance.

I found why we disagree.

If its just going to be an unbeaten contest then why wouldn't ambitious programs pull a BYU and schedule themselves an unbeaten year?
Since it isn't about the best teams getting in, anymore?
I'm not trying to strawman you, its just frustrating to see team quality not be an important factor anymore.

If they go undefeated they will play in a Big 6 bowl (or whatever they are calling the Committee Bowl Games)

Why is SOS a big determiner in your opinion? SOS to me are bogus. Team A could be 0-9 but match up better than Team x who is 5-4, but since 0-9 has worse record people assume that X is better than A, but really isn't.

Their thumping of Texas is a good win. UConn sucks this year so that hurts them. They are going to need Boise to step up. They are going to need Cal to beat UCLA and/or play Oregon close.

As of now an undefeated BYU is on the outside looking in. They need a lot of help.

Notre Dame had one of the most challenging schedules in the country two years ago

The complaint about them playing was more after the fact once the game was over.
