Actually, they likely used the extra tires on purpose in order to get DQed. They can now argue against a BOP adjustment by saying we weren't stupid fast because of the car (new suspension etc), but because we used an extra set of tires. If they don't get a BOP adjustment, they will run away with the 24-hour race unless they have misfortune.

Interesting theory.
Seems like that would make sense as using one too many sets of tires would be an easily available mistake.

Looks like the Mercedes drivers are gonna put up some dry wall before they show up to the race.

Alonso is out for the Japan with family emergency.
Feel sorry for whomever they are putting in the car. At least he has gotten used to the shitiness over time and built up a tolerance. That person is F'd.

Edit: False alarm, folks. Alonso is going to race. Don't mess up your prediction lists.

Seeing he will arrive in time for FP1 now... Had the baby and hit the road.
I guess what I was seeing was prior to the baby officially arriving and him potentially missing if delayed.

Looks like they are changing power settings for Quali.
Also, Merc is on the defensive after their front wing is getting heavily scrutinized. Russel says "they are just trying to slow us down"
Well duh

“The FIA has reduced the maximum permitted energy recharge in qualifying from nine megajoules to eight (roughly an 11 percent cut), which it said was “to ensure that the intended balance between energy deployment and driver performance is maintained.”
This should reduce the amount of superclipping required to harvest energy by around 4 seconds per lap, meaning drivers will be able to push the car to its limits and place greater emphasis on the internal combustion engine.
It will also have a small impact on the overall lap time, which the FIA estimates will be around half a second lower than expectations” Excerpt From “F1 energy rules tweaked for Japanese Grand Prix in bid to improve qualifying” Luke Smith The Athletic LINK This material may be protected by copyright.

Yeh looks like the investigation into Mercedes is over. They said they didn’t do it on purpose and that it’s actually a problem they are trying to solve so no big deal.
The FIA handling it a little differently than they do plank wear problems.
It’s crazy that they are changing the power regulations allowing them to spend more of the lap pushing, less of the lap clipping to charge the batteries, and the result is a 1 second loss per lap.

Yeah, they kind of lose me with all that talk. I don’t like the idea that they can’t push like crazy for one extreme quali lap like they used to.

Charles and Oscar both said after the last race that trying to find an extra tenth in Q3 actually hurt their times. Said pushing harder than they had been on previous laps caused the battery to run out earlier and slowed them down.

Bring back the V10. I want these guys to be risking their lives during qualifying to get the best time because its what they want to do.
I am for 100% renewable fuel but this battery stuff needs to go. I don't watch Formula E for a reason.

Yeah that's very interesting to me. I posted a list showing the tracks that have the highest to lowest "braking time : acceleration time" ratio. Albert Park was at or near the bottom (and we witnessed the pathetic superclipping on the curvy back straight), while Shanghai was closer to the top. But I saw that Suzuka was near the bottom like Albert Park. It's such a flowing track, with only two heavy braking points, the hairpin (halfway around the track), and the last chicane. I was expecting some sad superclipping as they approached 130R. They now obviously recognized the problem and made a change to fix it, at least for qualy. But if they don't apply this change for the race, I fear we're going to hear those dropping revs on the back straight like they are on a relaxing Sunday drive through the mountains.
