A couple of seasons of toiling around in the back of the pack has Carlos Sainz ready to reinvent formula 1.

I'm curious - what were Carlos' expectations when he joined Williams? Top of the midfield? Potentially supplant a post-Horner / post-Max Redbull? An edge on the new PU thanks to Williams' close relationship w/ Mercedes? I get that everyone at Williams probably expected to be where Alpine is season-to-date.

I don't think Williams was his first choice. Just where he ended up at.

Probably would have rathered stay at Ferrari or get a ride at Red Bull.

I think Williams was his best option at the time, and to be fair to him, they had some upward momentum going for them at the time.

I believe Audi and Haas were his only other landing spots. Seemed like he was holding out for RBR but they went a different direction.

Williams looked good last year. They have really dropped off.

Can someone explain to me why Williams had to redesign the car after that safety issue during testing? Remember when they were >40lbs overweight because they had to practically start over?

Shame on you you Vowles. I trusted you.

Virtually all teams fail one or more crash tests. They build right on the edge so passing the first time means they could have gotten away with less material/less weight. In the past some teams have been said to have failed 3 or 4 times.

My thought is that a small team like Williams gets really behind if they unexpectedly fail a 3rd or 4th test. Since Williams have fewer resources they would have to pull away from design/build of other parts to rebuild a new safety cell and associated parts.

Finally listening to the only podcast I follow that covers F1 and they(Chris Harris and friends) said something about George’s performance that stuck out to me.
They said the team made a mistake on his last pitstop, he called for more front wing because he was losing time/understeering before the stop and they accidentally gave him less front wing and made all that worse.

Hadn’t heard that yet but thought it was interesting.
