For context on viewer loss over the years and compared to college football.
OU/Michigan got 9,670,000 viewers. So Nascar got 15.4% of what one college game got. And that game was head to head with several other football games yet Nascar was only up against itself compared to other races.
Lets compare Kansas in 2007/8/9/10:
2007: 4.14m
2008: 5.56m
2009: 5.24m
2010: 3.74m
Check out some other 2008 ratings to see how far Nascar has dropped, these in order of races from Feb and on:
Daytona Bud Shootout: 8.5m
Daytona 500: 17.8m
Cali: 10.9m
Vegas: 12.1m
Atlanta: 10.5m
Bristol: 8.9m
Martinsville: 8.7m
Phoenix: 7.2m
Texas: 8.6m
Dega: 9.0m
Richmond: 7.3m
Darlington: 7.8m
Dover: 4.2m
Charlotte: 7.6m
Pocono: 6.1m
Michigan: 5.1m
Infineon: 6.1m
New Hampshire: 5.5m
Daytona: 6.4m
Chicago: 5.2m
Indy: 6.7m
Pocono: 6.2m
Watkins: 4.8m
Michigan: 5.3m
Bristol: 5.0m
Atlanta: 5.7m
Richmond: 4.0m
New Hampshire: 6.1m
Dover: 5.4m
Kansas: 5.7m
Auto club: 6.1m
Charlotte: 6.0m
Martinsville: 4.8m
Dega: 5.9m
Texas: 5.9m
Phoenix: 5.7m
Homestead: 6.6m
People who have not followed the sport have no idea how far this sport has been destroyed. This is why I mention it often. Anyone in any business would have been fired but the family has killed it on their own.
In 1979 the Daytona 500 got 15.14 million viewers. In 2023 same race got 8.173 million viewers. Think about that and the population changes since 1979. In 2006 same race got 19.355 million viewers. Thats more than any college football game ever.
RIP Nascar

I think we can attribute this to modern culture. The generation growing up isn’t as fascinated by cars as those that grew up in the generations prior. They’re fascinated by drama. The new generation has latched on to drive to survive because of the spectacle.
NASCAR is simply returning to a niche sport.
That being said nascar can blend some of what made them what they were and what they’re currently doing to move forward.
Keep the schedule diversity for one. Go back to full season points. Revamp points that heavily reward winning and running toward the front.
I’ve always thought it’s dumb that some races will have the winner earning the 4th or 5th most points.

There are so many ways to fix it but their leaders are brain dead. Some ideas:
Make tires that wear out faster and are a bit skinnier. Means cars slow down in corners which creates passing opportunities plus driver has more control over wear.
Get rid of Chase.
Bigger engines
Less downforce
Make a smaller gas tank (currently 20). Reduces fuel mileage races. Increases pot stops which creates drama and strategy.
Get rid of stages.
Give winner 15 extra points.
Get rid of all these TV deals and stick with one. Less races means they spend less on coverage. One carrier would invest more.
Give drivers who had most laps in top 5 extra points. 10/8/6/4/2. This rewards those consistent all day even if they get wrecked out they have something to show for their day.
Not all of these would work. But there are so many ideas out there.
Also, get some better booth folks. I hate the current group. One talks down to you. Another sounds like first one, are they twins? Then one is trying to stroke out by creating fake drama from the start meaning he has nothing left for real drama.
I’m just talking to a mirror. None of this matters. Nascar was so popular the discussion used to be non stop during the week. Paybacks were a big part of it. And innovation too. Everyone thought Nascar gave the other MNFR better concessions (before clone clown car). It was Chevy vs Ford arguments. Not now, its a cloned car.
And you have to get rid of half the rules. There is ability to tinker with the car. That was part of sport. Now its just IROC.

Agree with letting the crews use more innovation.
Get rid of single-source parts.
No more mandatory spoiler angles.
Bring back air dams.
Season-long points, using the old CART points system.
Make it easier for teams to enter selected races (part-time schedule)
No one should have a guaranteed starting spot.
Clamp down on rough driving on road courses. Sometimes, it's like a hockey game out there.

Agreed on going back to full-season points, as do most(Chase chief amongst them) drivers.
Winners need to be rewarded with more points to put more weight on winning.
This is probably true.

I’m fine with halfway points for the top ten. But don’t stop the action.
I still maintain that positions 11th on back should only be a point per position.
Points should increase incrementally inside the top ten. Like the winner should be 18-20 more than second. And 75-80 more than 10th.

I like the old CART system better.
20-16-14-12-10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1
One point for pole, one for most laps led.
It's enough separation that no one will get more points than the winner, but keeps the points chase close and interesting.

Reddick’s 4 month old son has been dealing with some serious health issues and it appeared that he was possibly in heart failure. He had improved enough that Reddick was able to race last weekend and is racing this weekend. Now it appears they have an answer to what is going on with the little guy:

That's great news. Hope the little guy makes a full and speedy recovery.
Riddick seems like a genuinely good dude.

Was an interesting race at the roval. SVG let Larson and Bell burn up their tires the last two stages and would eventually over take them each time and go on to win. Of course you wouldn't know about that strategy from the coverage because all they covered for the last 2 3rds of the race was the Ross and Joey scenario.
Overall the coverage was kind of meh and I'm already tired of listening to Leigh Diffey in the booth. Also, thanks to this stupid playoff format, you thought the only two drivers on the track at the end were Chastain and Logano. Yea, I get it, they are fighting for the last transfer spot, but they hardly covered the fight for the lead the last half of the race and there were plenty of other battles going on that they never showed.

Hamlin was pissed his team didn’t let him know that him passing Ross on the last lap would lock Joey into the next round of the playoffs.

I thought it was a very good race. I figured there’s no way that Hamlin passes watermelon boy and let’s Logano in but now I realize that he didn’t know. Either way, other people were coming up fast behind them. Three cars finishing the race backwards is incredible. Larson fought SVG very hard but SVG was just too good at saving his equipment. Yes the coverage could have been better but the racing was great.

Look at what Keselowski said.
The guy who dominated the race got barely any coverage compared to a battle between 8th and 9th in points.
SVG should be the story from yesterday. Not a footnote.

Via Jayski from my Facebook feed, filed tonight in the 23XI/Front Row case. The Frances are going to win again:
In a filing Monday night, NASCAR asked the Western District Court of North Carolina to order the parties to participate in a judicial settlement conference to be convened by the Court and appointing a judicial officer, such as the magistrate judge assigned to this case or another judicial officer, to preside over the settlement conference.
“The parties have indicated a willingness to resolve this case and have attempted to do so through mediation and settlement conferences. Other Charter holders have now indicated that their desire is that this litigation be resolved….Accordingly, NASCAR believes that the parties would benefit from a facilitated settlement discussion with a distinguished member of the bench who could provide unique insight into a jury trial in a complex matter such as this one in front of a jury in this District. Recognizing the value of a judicial settlement conference, this Court has previously indicated a willingness to offer a judicial settlement conference at a similar stage in the proceedings: after efforts with a private mediator and following the close of discovery and filing of summary judgment motions.”

Kenny has an interesting take on why NASCAR now wants to settle and how they probably misjudged Jordan’s “don’t give a frick”
