Lets look at a completely different angle.
Austin raced Joey clean for several laps. He also had the best car he’s had in years. And he drove a brilliant race which had so many plot-lines with the Alt tire strategies.
Flashback. How many races have had late race cautions. And drivers have complained how it lost them a race. Many many times.
Way out there and just for fun conspiracy lol:
It almost seems scripted and I mentioned this earlier in thread but its like Nascar has a secret light and contract with back-markers and part of this is you get paid under the table to be part of this program - and if ever called upon you get big bonus money.
So Nascar has had no wrecks entire race and they hit this small secret light button that flashes in Wrecky Stenhouses and the other drivers car. Thats the bat signal to cause a wreck before the last lap to force overtime.
Ok, back to reality: Austin drives a perfect race and has to work hard getting by Joey and then as hard to pass Hamlin. He is on his way to the win his best race in years. Caution comes out and he is red mad inside.
Then restart he loses lead and is still red mad about the late caution is going to cost him a well earned win. So he tells himself that these backmarkers wrecking will not take his win away and I’m going to get checkers or wreckers, so he wipes out Joey and Hamlim. In his mind its justified because he earned it all race long.
Its possible thats his thinking and it had nothing to do personally with Joey or Hamlin. He was not going to be denied his win.
I don’t like wrecking for wins so regardless the reason he was wrong. But I can understand why he did it. He was not going back to pit road after finishing 2nd and face his team by blowing the restart.
Another point, Nascar needs to have big fines to the team who causes a wreck in the last 5 laps. Like NHRA has oil down fines they need to fine teams for it. Those late race yellows change so many finishing positions.

a really good and balanced take from Kyle Petty on this.
Agreed. Extremely fair.
Loved how he called out both Hamlin and Logano for previous incidents. Though I had no problem w/Denny's response/reaction. It was very measured, thoughtful and well delivered. Joey was beside himself obviously.

Austin Dillion Saturday last night...

quote:Denny just got shafted from a fluke win, and has his own podcast where he knows people will listen to get his honest take. Joey had a win stolen that would have moved him from 10/11 in the playoff picture to 5/6 which is big to help with advancement. They both got wrecked by the guy who won, but different stakes and opportunities.

And on an interesting side note, the wreck in Cars was modeled almost exactly from Dale wrecking Rusty at Talladega in 1993. Watch them side by side....

I used to never miss a race. I think I've watched one race all year.
NASCAR chose to make itself a gimmick and attendance and interest has followed accordingly.

I can't wait for the reaction when Joey is fined the most for his actions on pit road. Austin's win won't be taken away nor will he lose points. The spotter will be fined for sure and used as the scape goat. Will be an interesting Tuesday for NASCAR.

Erik Jones re-signs with legacy.

We've seen this before.
Comparing what Dillon did to anything tGOAT did and how he raced is idiotic.

Dale Jr. interviews Dillon earlier today:

Jr is trying to hide it in his face, but his eyes are calling 100% BS to AD's whole explanation. Dude went from "it had been 2 years I had to do it, I hope they're alright" to "they really wrecked themselves if you think about it" when grandaddy told him the fine was coming out of his inheritance.

Bullseye. That’s why I shared the video.

He almost looks pissed at him at times in that interview. Which, I can understand. That is still his Dad's number that is for all intents and purposes a mid pack to backmarker at this point. That and JR is 100% invested in the health and future of the sport, and he knows that's not it. He's also has said on podcasts before that if you do it, do it, but own it. So I guess he probably is a little pissed on several fronts with AD.

If I had to guess, if either Hamlin or Logano are close to Austin Dillion in 2 weeks at Daytona, the #3 Chevy is going to hit the wall hard.

Seeing Twitter conversation from various sources that follow NASCAR that nothing is coming out of Daytona Beach today.
None of us (and probably them too) know jack caca, but for what it's worth the growing consensus of that conversation is that Dillon will get to keep the win and the playoff spot, but will likely get a fine and could get playoff points taken away going in; that the spotter will get a fine and stay home for a while; that Logano will get a big arse fine; and that NASCAR will threaten to start taking wins away at the track if caca like this happens again.
And I guarantee you those nimrods are dragging this out because they are LOVING this publicity ... so many people are calling it a "black eye on the sport," but I promise you they're loving it.

The issue with that is for the third year in a row you have had someone hook another driver in the right rear and send them into the wall. The precedent has been set for that one. Also if they don't send the message now then they are giving an opportunity for someone like Mr H to appeal and say this is unprecedented punishment based off past rulings. Not that he would ever do that and get points back and just pay a tiny fine. If you land the hammer now though he will have to accept it like he did Chase's suspension last year.
Posted on 8/13/24 at 4:53 pm to AwesomeSauce
Fair points, but I fear we're through the looking glass here. And when has NASCAR at any moment in its 76-year history been consistent?
Posted on 8/13/24 at 4:56 pm to InkStainedWretch
quote:They have been more so since Mr H got the Byron penalty reduced through arbitration. That is why Chase got the same suspension Bubba got even though you know NASCAR didn't want to. They have to be consistent or arbitration will strip their power if/when an owner appeals a penalty/
