Looking at that, the factbthat Blaney won the championship is indicative that the playoff setup needs a complete overhaul (it actually needs to be scrapped, but they won't do that)

Said it at the beginning of the year. Watch out for RFK racing.
They will contend next year.
That is a solid team. Their improvement was unbelievable over the course of the season.

2003 was the last season without some form of playoffs for the Championship. The system was simply whoever accumulated the most points was the champion. It was simple and made sense. Then Kenseth won the title in 2003 with only one win. That resulted in the Chase and ultimately the playoff system. Kenseth was incredibly consistent that year (11 Top 5’s, 25 Top 10’s), but people just couldn't stand the idea of a guy with only one victory winning the championship. People also did not like that the championship could possibly be decided with several races still to go in the season (F1 is still this way).
The question is: Would the current fan base be able to stomach that former system now or is a playoff system that forces the championship to come down to the final race necessary to keep them interested?

I listen to Eric Estepp whenever he posts videos on YouTube. He said it's hard for new fans to follow the sport because they don't understand all the scenarios. The Winston Cup was fine. If you wanna tinker with it, do this:
Positions 11-40 are increased by 1 point. Then increase by 3,4, 5, etc. until you get to the winner. Give back a bonus point for leading a lap, leading the most laps, and add in a bonus point for winning the pole.
I'm ok with the top 10 getting points at halfway. But NASCAR has gone too far with their changes.

I don't think that indicates the system needs an overhaul, it indicates that its a bad system. Which we already knew anyway. Playoffs don't work for racing.
I would be interested to see how much F1 ratings drop off after the championship is decided. F1 to me feels more like "an event", where the NASCAR season is so long and on every week where each individual race is devalued some. I guess the thought experiment there is how much does NASCAR actually need a playoff, and why does F1 seem fine without one?

Exactly. NASCAR has already tinkered with the playoff format several times over the last 20 years. Changing the system again is like chasing shadows. Playoffs by nature, across all sports, are susceptible to randomness and unexpected outcomes. If there was an obvious fix besides going back to the old points format, they would've figured it out by now.
And honestly, what does NASCAR really have to lose by going back to the old Winston Cup format? They will obviously continue to argue that the playoff maintains fan interest, but the current system is needlessly complicated and turns away new and casual fans. Those are the exact people they are trying to attract.

Just do like now and have a reg season winner.
Then reset everyone for last 10 races to 0 but can award the reg season bonus points like now. No one eliminated just best racer over 10. Helps with mechanicals or plate race madness too. Fan fave Chase would have been in it too and helped ratings.

William Byron would've won under the Winston Cup format.
I miss this format.

Ryan Blaneys uncle, Dale, played basketball at WVU in the 80's and was drafted by the Lakers in 1986 but quit before the season to focus on racing.

That graphic is comparable to the Patriots going into the super bowl undefeated and losing to the Giants.
Ya, the Patriots were the actual champions that year.

My Jan 31 list lol. Wow, talk about a losing prediction. I did see Kes having breakout year even though he missed out his team made it in. And did not expect Chase to have a broken leg. Fully expected Harvick to get top notch equipment at a 4 car race shop. Hamlin was a power steering failure away. Did not see Blaney coming though.

I've been on this for a few months and haven't been received well, LOL. But that's ok. It's time for a change IMO.
