Also, I don't think the driving in this gif is impressive. He's flooring it and ramming it up against the barricade. It's exactly what I do when I play a racing video game or drive go-karts at the beach. Where is the skill in that?
If I'm being honest, its not.
But it gets to the durability of the cars racing in Nascar, which is about Eleventy Billion times more durable than a F2 car.....

Agreed. There ain't much driver going on in this race.
I haven't watched a Nascar race in ages. Not sure when ESPN stopped covering it but I really haven't even kept up with the standing in years. ESPN has pretty much forgotten about Nascar and to an extent, baseball as well. Which is a bit sad.
But to say there ain't much going on in a Nascar race is a bit ridiculous (unless you were meaning that one race in particular). I like F1 10x better than I do Nascar, but I think even though they are just going around in circles, they are better drivers/racers. Meaning they are more important to the outcome than F1 drivers are.
That's the one thing that is a bit frustrating to me about F1 is that even though you have 20 cars, there's really only a chance of MAYBE 5 drivers winning on any given race. This year it almost looks like there is a chance for two. That can make for some pretty boring racing. I never felt that way watching Nascar.

re: Nascar vs. Formula 1
I love all motor sport. F1 is my favorite, but I'll watch any kind of racing.
Hell I might watch boat racing if I happen to see it on TV

I guess this is an indication that IndyCar has huge problems with the product and/or marketing when someone in an F1 thread brings up the biggest difference in the on-track fan experience* between F1 and IndyCar (everyone in IndyCar uses the same chassis and aero so every team has a chance to win races if they can get everything else right), but IndyCar is not even brought up in the conversation.

(*To be clear, IMO the fact that F1 is much faster than IndyCar on road courses is irrelevant to the experience. They are both fast and as a fan, the on-track battles are what make it interesting to watch. And you can't see the technology differences while watching a race (except DRS, which isn't as good as the far-more-strategic time-limited push-to-pass system). F1 is an eye-popping glamorous idea and feeling, and a technology showcase, more than a racing series.)

I appreciate both for what they are, but NASCAR has kinda been ruined for me by the points system and the playoffs. Especially after getting into F1 where each position in the standings is so valuable and hard fought for. Plus each week is equally important.
Like if Kmag or Hulk finish P5 one week that’s a huge deal. NASCAR has kinda made it win or bust which I guess is exciting in a way, but often turns the race into a clown show of wrecks because it’s win or bust.
Also the cautions are often bullshite to manufacture drama.

I didn't realized I brought up IndyCar. Something I've never watched in my entire life. I was talking about F1 and Nascar. Unless you were talking about someone else.

Sorry, that was totally vague!

If you are a relatively recent F1 fan (in particular if you were brought in by Drive to Survive), then it totally makes sense that you haven't watched any IndyCar, but I didn't think about this recent phenomenon.

Again, my main comment was that IndyCar is suffering from a bad product and/or terrible marketing when it's not even brought up in a conversation where IndyCar has its strength (the competitive nature up and down the grid). I happen to think the product is pretty good so it must be terrible marketing.

But it’s not a bad product. It just needs to find its way. Turbo V6 engines are basically what F1 does. Add that to the spec chassis, and it seems less.
If Indy is going to use a spec chassis, there should be more open engine rules. 2 engine suppliers supplying basically the same engine is a bore, especially with spec chassis.
Engine rules like what is in sports car racing, basically have rules that match or come close to racing engines that are already in production, would liven up the series. Obviously there would need to be some sort of BOP, which sucks, it it would reduce the spec series stigma.

Got ya. I guess I have watched the Indy 500 a few times now that I think about it but that's it. I would probably watch more of it if each race was shown on a major network/got better coverage. I'm not a big car guy so just watching racing in general isn't something I'm naturally drawn to. I mean I love to ride dirt bikes and even was in a few races, but I have zero desire to watch dirt bike racing on TV.
I kind of hate to admit it but ESPN has influenced what I watch more than I'd like. I don't follow baseball nearly as much as I used to and ESPN doesn't show baseball or baseball highlights nearly as much as they used to. Even NASCAR. I watched it probably up until shortly after high school and ESPN faded that coverage out and I haven't watched it in years (wouldn't mind giving it a shot).
I don't really know anybody in real life that watched IndyCar to even talk to them about it like I do F1 now. That definitely plays a part too. But if it is more competitive then I would like that. Seems like it gets hated on more than it does complimented. If you fail in F1 or are past your prime, go to IndyCar.

Someone mentioned earlier that F1 combines a lot of factors. Exclusivity, celebrity, exotic destinations/locales, and whatever DTS has brought. F1 also has heritage that Indy/CART/IRL/etc didn't maintain. Add in "premium" manufacturers and sponsors that have been around for years. The cutting edge of engineering and technology.
Bernie was a stickler for maintaining that aura around F1 and it does seem to help bridge into certain demographic that otherwise wouldn't care about autosports. For better or worse.

I want to be an IndyCar fan, but the schedule is so sporadic and when I do manage to catch a race, the commercial breaks are out of control. That being said, I’ll still try to watch a few this season.

Yeah, I tried to watch some as well but it just doesn't have the allure that F1 does. It's a shame because I've the race in St. Petersburg is great and would be easy for me to attend.

Anyone here going to stay up and watch the race at midnight?
Posted on 3/28/23 at 2:10 pm to Tornado Alley
It's only 10:00 pm for me. No problem.

Hogs that day. I might still be awake for it, but that is highly questionable

I usually say I'm going to, but it's tradition for me to tap-out about 11:00.
