Will they add 5 seconds to his race time and hand the victory to Hamilton? Isn't that the penalty they gave to Alonso in the first race?

This kinda sums up the ending.

Haas protesting as all the cars had passed SC line 2 when the red was thrown.

Contact patch not outside the grid box, so no penalty.

A closer inspection of Verstappen's wheels shows that while some of the front tyre was overhanging the line, the actual contact patch was never outside of the grid box. This was therefore a case of Verstappen being absolutely on the limit with his positioning of the car to try to give himself as much of a head start as possible in the critical run to the first corner. But with visibility so limited from the cockpit with the current generation of cars, it is hard to know how much of Verstappen's placement of his Red Bull was down to luck and how much down to judgement.

What a mess last night… woke up to watch, watched the first hour then dozed off only to wake up to final red flag and drama.
Ferrari is a shitshow, Merc is a mixed bag of possums, McLaren is laughable, AM is legit, and RB will own the constructors a little after 3/4 season.

I just can't wrap my head around that second red flag. That was so unnecessary. It's like the caution decisions prioritize generating the most entertainment rather than what's actually needed.

Just finished up.
What a clusterfrick of a "race." It all started with that first red flag, which robbed us of pit strategy. 2nd red flag was total bullshite. Sometimes a race ends under yellow, and F1 needs to be okay with that.

Would have saved about an hour and saved us from that circus. Absolutely a disgrace of race handling.

I'd've been pretty pissed if I stayed up for the race.

The was not lacking on entertainment. There were also some other great battles throughout it. Ot just leaves you with a bad taste when all this other crap happens and it feels like fia worked some magic.

Sainz post race radio. Heartbreaking but I do think he's at fault

Something I’ve realized this season is that Mick Schumacher was so bad, he made K-Mag look good.

quote:Not according to the shadow. Camera angle from above and behind can make it appear that way, but his tire shadow is well behind it. Find a different view of the moment. That view makes everyone appear over the line. He was exactly on the line with his front tires which is legal. Also, the FIA has sensors report on every car to tell them if they are outside the lines.
Max over the line at the restart.
Article 48.1 (c) of the FIA’s Sporting Regulations states penalties can be handed to a driver should they have “any part of the contact patch of its front tires outside of the lines (front and sides) at the time of the Start signal.” The 'contact patch' is that bit of the tire that actually touches the ground.
The car can sit forwards of that white line, but the contact patch is just, by a matter of probably a few millimeters, fully in contact with the white line and past and over it.
So Verstappen’s car is just within the regulations.

Except that Alonso's position was restored, and Sainz was not the cause of the red flag. Because they rolled the order back to the start of the 57th lap, Sainz caused no damage and should not have been penalized.
