I think it goes by who announces 1st. Not really a loophole.

I think it was. The “who announces first” rule was changed this year to qualifying times.

I would think how many new components each driver takes would have more effect. I would replace everything and start last. Stack those free spares

Initially for first practice, Ferrari only fitted a third energy store (10 places) and a fifth MGU-K (five places) of the season for Leclerc, who was given a 15-place grid penalty as a result.

For second practice, Ferrari fitted a fourth control electronics of the season. For this, Leclerc received an extra five-place grid penalty.

But the penalties are not cumulative. And the regulations specifically state: “If a driver incurs a penalty exceeding fifteen (15) grid places he will be required to start the race from the back of the starting grid.”

So two penalties totaling 25 spots is better than one penalty totaling 20 spots.

Did Ferrari just big brain the whole grid?

They are definitely going to screw the pooch now.

Leclerc could take another engine tomorrow and his starting grid spot wouldn't change. He is still ahead of Verstappen.

I'm definitely not following that at all????

Splitting them into two practices makes them 2 penalties and not 3?

That is how it is described. Any single assessment of penalties that combine to over 15 is automatically back of the grid.

So if there is a session (practice or race) then any additional penalties are starting over. Which means they may have 45 grid spot penalties across 3 sessions, but they still start ahead of someone who only had a 20 place penalty, because that is auto back of the grid.

To go further. Leclerc doesn't have to even attempt to qualify tomorrow and he still starts at least one spot ahead of Max.

It’ll be fun watching them work through the pack then right when it looks like they may turn it into something, figure out a way to implode.

Same thing I am thinking. They forgot to change a part out and waited until after FP1 to do it. Inadvertently fell into a barrel of titties.

The rule book is as complex as the cars.

And now apparently Leclerc took more components so lumped into same "back of grid" group with Max and others.

I just started watching, and if you are like me, you are wondering what damaged the barrier. It was during the Porsche Supercup qualifying:

Are there discussion around going away from grid penalties and to point penalties for new components?

Discussing with Gunther right now?

Not sure if if passed (think it was), but there will be championship points penalties for exceeding the budget cap.
