Willy T. Ribbs was a great TransAm driver in the 80s, but was sorta more well known for struggling to get established in IndyCar. Bill Cosby personally sponsored him for a run at the Indy 500 but he never had good equipment in IndyCar and fizzled out. The documentary 'Uppity' asserts that his career was hamstrung by racism, which is not hard to believe considering social conditions at the time.
