Likely a two stop race. With the track being washed with tonight's storm will be interesting to see what the plan is tomorrow.
Gonna be a luck of the draw on PIT strategy… There will be yellows if not reds at some point. Who gets the benefit of pitting under one of them

It makes attempting an undercut scary as hell.

Those softs have lasted a long time. Someone has gotta try a one stopper.

Charles tied Vettel today with the 5th most poles for Ferrari with 12. Ascari had 13 and Massa 15 so if things go well the rest of the season he should just be behind Lauda (23) and Schumacher (58).

Rewatching qualifying and laptimes were all over the place. As an example Bottas barely got out of Q1, just nipping Mag, and ended up 5th in Q3.
Seemed to be difficult for a lot/most drivers to put together a good lap. Even Chuck said he screwed up the first couple corners on his pole lap.

Someone explain why VET was wearing boxer briefs over his fire suit

At least 1 red, maybe 2. Probably caused by people not wanting to put waiting for the red.
My prediction

FIA decided to crack down on some safety stuff.
Drivers are being drivers about it.
Vettel did it as a sort of "hey, is this what you are talking about"

Starting from the back the typical play might be to put on hards. I'm thinking to roll the dice and plan on a red within the first 15 laps and start on the softs. Try and make up some spots. Especially Haas with the Ferrari power combined with the DRS zones.

How much longer will Danny Ric be around?
How much longer will Mick be around?
Does Albon deserve a better ride than the Williams?

40 years ago today (tomorrow for most of you) Gilles Villeneuve lost his life at Zolder during qualifying. His first race was with Mclaren but the remainder were with Ferrari. Gilles along with Aryton and Kimi are my trinity of raw speed F1 drivers. He often danced well beyond the level of adhesion. His car control was epic. He only won 6 races (a bigger deal in the day) and his highest finish in the WDC was second to his teammate Scheckter in 1979. The last championship Ferrari won until they won the WCC in '99.
Arguably his greatest exhibition of skill was a fight for second place with Rene Arnoux at the '79 French GP at Dijon. Gilles was in the 312T4 (3L V12) and Arnoux was in the Renault RS10 with the 1.5L Turbo V6 that was jacked up as much as possible for the team's home race.

RE his death
The crash occurred with a few minutes left in qualifying and Gilles was chasing his teammate Pironi's time. He and Pironi had been in a feud for the last couple of weeks. He caught Jochen Mass in his March-Ford going slow, they both moved the same direction for the pass and Gilles hit the March at about 140mph and was launched airborne for more than 325 feet, when it nosedived into the ground Gilles, still strapped in his seat but having lost his helmet, was thrown another 150ft into a catch fence. He had a pulse after the accident but his neck was broken and he couldn't breathe. When he arrived at the hospital he was kept on life support until his wife Joann arrived.
YT crash footage
I mentioned he and Pironi were feuding at the time. PlanetF1 did a good article on the rivalry earlier in the week.

Some of his best drives outside of the 79 French GP in case someone wants to look for them:
1979 Dutch Grand Prix best F1 drive with a flat tire
1981 Spanish Grand Prix best F1 defensive drive if Checo at Yas Marina was legendary this was God tier
1981 Canadian Grand Prix best F1 drive with the car missing a front wing
1979 United States Grand Prix (Watkins Glen) incredible wet race
I assume there will be some sort of tribute or at least mention of this tomorrow.

Two of those guys grew up driving and racing in snow and ice.
Us northerners learn car control in the winter.
Gilles was an epic snowmobile racer as well.

Maybe it was you who mentioned it, but Jaques is there with his son Gilles this weekend

After unveiling plans for a dramatic race on the Strip, the company behind Formula One says it’s also buying property near Las Vegas’ famed casino corridor for a hefty price.
Greg Maffei, president and CEO of F1 parent Liberty Media Corp., said in an earnings call Friday that Liberty entered an agreement to acquire 39 acres east of the Strip for $240 million.
He expects the sale to close this quarter and said the company was buying the site in part “to lock in circuit design.”
During the call, company officials did not say which property they are buying in Las Vegas, nor did they say why they opted to purchase the site as opposed to leasing it ahead of next year’s race.
