With the tires off they do look like they have drum brakes.

The drum is part of the cooling system for the brakes.

They actually use the brake heat to warm the tires, so managing this heat is important for more than just keeping the brakes from melting.

Yep. Checo said the asphalt was coming up during his hot laps on Wed/Thurs. The officials kind of said that was expected. The asphalt is supposed to degrade to show a more grippy surface or some excuse.
