Spieth doing Spieth things so far. Three approach shots within 35 yards, three long putts, 2 bogeys.

Looks like a short week for him. Blows my mind how poor his pitching and chipping has been recently.

You underestimate how quick Speith can get on a run. You won't see many pars from him today

Going on a run =\= competing seriously for the tournament. Hitting a bunch of shitty chips and pitches isn’t a recipe for success when the best part of his game is his short game.

What are you talking about here?

I was talking about his missed birdie putt on 2. It looked closer to 10-12 feet to me, but apparently it was closer to 20.

The rest of that I just meant that with as little as he’s played competitively and his back limiting his practice time, he’s likely not gonna be able to grind his way to pars at worst when he doesn’t have his A game. Especially at a course set up for a major. He’s gonna inevitably hit some wayward shots and make some bogeys (or doubles). That’s why he needs to take advantage of all these shortish putts to keep pace with the young guys who bomb it and have been playing consistently.

But maybe most importantly, he’s got to make some of those putts like he missed on #3 early, in order to build his confidence and get some momentum going. I just don’t think he can count on birdying the Par 5s and keeping the rest of his card clean with pars.

Swing speeds are good early. A lot better early than at Memorial. Good sign.

Hopefully his flat stick cooperates too.

That’s the biggest thing, and why making these 10-12 footers early is so important to his confidence. I think Brandel said this morning that Tiger is dead last on tour in putting within 12 feet. Not a huge sample size, but it’s got to be in his head.

Spieth still hasn’t recovered from that dreadful 12th hole at Augusta.

No doubt. And you know he hates to concede so much length off the tee to these guys, but he knows he’s probably the best iron player ever, and it’s more important he hits em from the fairway.

frick Yes!!! What a putt. 4 holes—4 putts for birdie. Great start.

Tiger needs to make this at 3, though.

Needing to make a putt when you're on your 3rd hole of the tournament, and already under par, seems a little overstated

Of course. But I meant more for his confidence than his actual score.
