OP’s list is better because he considers that loses like WVU’s were the program blowing a once in a lifetime chance.

Plus the fact that they won a national title 3 years prior. It's also widely accepted that Oklahoma State would've been steamrolled by LSU in 2011, yet their loss at Iowa State is universally ranked higher on the pain index due to both their lack of a national title and the fact that it was a generational season for them.

RichRod likely stays at WVU and doesn't take the Michigan job, maybe Les Miles does? I always wonder what may have happened to the landscape if this game had gone the way it was supposed to.

This isn’t as notable as some others on that list, but it will always be the ‘06 SEC Championship Game for me. If Arkansas had won that game, it would have drastically altered the perception of the program moving forward.

Especially had y'all also beaten us the week before. You would've played for a national title against an Ohio State team that Florida demolished.

I've always thought Herbstreit's report was accurate and Pitt upsetting WVU was the curveball that prevented it from happening.
The domino effect from that game is the greatest "what if" in recent college football history.

Should have one of FSU’s losses to Miami on there. Either ‘87, ‘91 or ‘92. Change three heartbreaking plays in the Miami series, FSU doesn’t slip out of the gate in ‘89, and it changes things dramatically.
But FSU under Bowden had a habit of fricking up when the pressure was on. They would beat the Cowboys by three touchdowns in a bowl game, though, if the national championship wasn’t on the line.

This is mostly true. WVU isn't an elite program but they played for a national championship in 88, had an outside shot in 93 (if WVU would have dominated Florida like Florida dominated them in the Sugar Bowl the AP poll and Coaches poll would probably have crowned WVU because FSU and Nebraska game was 18-16 FSU), and also in 2007 was another missed opportunity.
So not quite once in a lifetime. More like once every 15 years or so since 1980. Nehlen changed the WVU football program. They are a solid tier 2 program in college football. NIL might knock them down though. Seems like college football is going NFL lite.

The back and forth momemtum and lead changes in that game were unreal.
Not sure exactly what time the game wrapped up, but it was early evening. I was so exhausted by the time it was over that I just went to bed.

I’m an LSU fan, was cheering for Ohio State in 2002 National Championship, but I was depressed for Miami. That is #1 most depressing loss I’ve ever seen.
