I’m down 44% over the past year with an initial investment of $25k. Would you cut your losses on this, or hold onto it and hopefully ride back to even?

Kicking myself knowing I could have made that up then some on some index funds in 2020

I've held XOM for years at a loss. I finally cut bait with some of it to buy some of the more active stocks that are being discussed on this board. I'm not totally out, but cut my position in about half to try and recapture some gains. The dividend still makes it worthwhile to me- it's up about 20% from its low, so even if it trades sideways for a while, there's still a 7.5% dividend

I sold my cvx about 5 months ago. Took a hell of a loss. Started investing in other things and my total portfolio is up almost 30 grand total. Glad I did. I'm back in cvx for about 20 grand now

That’s the point I’ve gotten to. I don’t see it getting back to $77 anytime soon

I think it’s ok to hold through about $60. Above that I’d be concerned long term.

It’s up 50% in the last 2.5 months, dividend is secure now and oil seems to be holding 50 before the economy is fully opened back up. If I were going to sell I would have done it on December 31 to take the losses on taxes or offset some other gains.

You definitely have a stomach for tough investing if you held from 70 down to 30, twice, while the rest of the market was going gangbusters.

xom just reported some significant successful step outs on some large conventional oil discoveries...(pretty sure i read this and figured it played into the recent bump)...????

fyi i started picking up xom, chevron and rdsd around march and they are rebranding into energy companies..i am thinking rdsb and xom will move into more wind as europe is headed there with offshore windmills everywhere.....

and i needed some dividend stocks

Read up on @XOM connections with fuel cell

With more regulations coming, and the demand for oil continuing through 2040, this could position them as the winner long term

30 grand on a $30,000 investment? Or on a 3 million dollar investment?

I don’t want to know. Just pointing out that your numbers don’t indicate anything. Percentages tell the story.

At least the dividend is good. Treat it like a bond.

Jet fuel demand still way down but people not invested or were interested in investing in oil missed a bottom on oil/energy sector TWICE. Wait till jet fuel demand gets back close to pre-covid before selling XOM.

Could you have made more in other areas? Sure but hindsight is 20/20
