I started a little late and also have gone three years without contributing anything due to self employment but I just did the calculations and if I average a 12% return until I retire, I’ll be sitting at around $3,500,000 in retirement, not including my wife’s pension of around ~$45,000/year in retirement. I realize that’s a good bit less than many others however it’s also a hell of a lot more than I would’ve thought when I first started saving 10 years ago. I’ve averaged about 40% over the past five years (thank you, Trump) but am counting on an average of 12% from here on out.

Edit:
I’m a dumbass — my average over the past five years is NOT 40%. Average was actually half that at 19.71%.

16-17 - 16.72%
17-18 - 6.17%
18-19 - 14.42%
19-20 - 20.22%
20-21 - 41.01%

Average then out and it is 19.71%.

I’m an idiot and will remain middle class
Carry on!

From where I sit 12% looks like a hard get going forward. I am concerned government spending will eventually crowd out the private sector? Debt repayment, inflation or default are the choices going forward.

Are democrats running the country? IF so, good luck with this. I'm not planning this at all.

But your totals, should be plenty of money to do whatever you want whenever you want and however you want.

I'm going to have less than that, and will be able to do whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want.

It's all about your wants I guess.

if I average 100% return until I retire, I'll be sitting at around $1,048,576,000,000 in retirement, not including my wife's pension of around ~$350/year in retirement .

No worries, baw. Our elite class has come up with a theory that states this doesn't happen!

12%, good luck w that. I'm not confident at all w an estimated 6% return. Heck, I'm starting to slightly worry about just keeping up w/ inflation. Was hoping to hit $3m before retiring next year w a $70k pension but it may just as easily slip to $2.5m if there's a market correction. You're not even contributing? Have you considered a SEP or Solo401k? Do you and wife do Roth IRAs?

For me the biggest indicator is when do I actually want to retire. I keep pushing that 60-62 range (when youngest should be done w undergrad) and that'll push me to that $3.25-3.5M range. But, if I still enjoy what I do, and continue to have flexibility; I would not mind doing it until I can't. So, I could potentially be retiring with around $7-$10M and in my 70s

The biggest things for me is my wife (no pics) is 7 years younger than me. And as long as I can travel and work a reduced schedule (even at a lower salary) when I'm in my 60s & 70s why wouldn't I keep going. With my family history, I have to plan on ways to keep the mind active

Use this formula:

((Ending Value/Starting Value)^(1/n))-1

Better for analyzing returns over several periods of time

Everyone thinks they are middle class. In reality, you are actually rich compared to most folks. Good job on the saving/investing.

I wish I would have started at my current company a long time ago. The lifers are killing it in their 401k.
