What's fair reimbursement of time for working 1/2 day on weekend?

I need some employees to work occasionally on the weekends. My current rule of thumb is essentially you can take twice the time you worked during the weekend off the following week. So if you work 4 hours Saturday you can take Monday off.

Basically in a 10 day pay period you'd work 9.5 "shifts".

People are griping. I'm about to tell them to pound sand. But thought I'd get 3rd party opinions?

I'd prefer to make it somewhat of a "benefit" as I know its not ideal. But we need it done, end of story.

I only get 1:1 comp time. If I work 1hr outside of business hours I only get to take 1hr off during business hours.

That sounds more than fair to me. I would certainly take it.

The issue is I need someone management worthy to work 12-4 ish on Saturdays. Its once a month for the most part occasionally twice. I know ruining a Saturday sucks being middle of the day. I want people to have 2 days of weekends and not get burned out. So yes I'm pretty pissed that people aren't even happy. But I also want to be fair and employees happy.

I think that is fair. I would work two 10 hour days on Saturday, Sunday and take 5 days off.

Ha, I wish that's how it worked.

I meant that a couple Saturdays a month I need extra help from my normal M-F staff, 3-6 hours. I work them too so I'm not asking much.

fire their asses. your employees are spoiled.

tell them to work 7 days a week 14 hours a day for 6 months straight like i've done before. then they might STFU.

tell them be glad you have a job or pack your shite.

I wouldnt want to give up what amounts to my entire Saturday because of the time half the weeks of the year if I didn't know that going in. Its coming off as you are asking them pretty short notice to do this. The 2:1 comp time is more than fair for when they do have to do it, im just letting you know why they are probably pissed. 2 weekends a month on short notice isn't a small ask.

Its not short notice, I need 1 person to work every Saturday. We plan it out basically a month at a time. Its a small office so if one person switches something around it changes things, but outside of that they know.

Additionally, this was known when they were hired. We haven't had to do it a lot because I have been doing it for the most part. I'm tired of doing it every Saturday when I hired people to help, so now that we've grown I'm enforcing it.

ETA: And you are right, if these were proven people that had good resumes and made good money it wouldn't be ideal. But these are basically low end management rolls working to move up. They should be jumping when I say jump to get ahead.

Yeah, that's different if they knew going in. In that case, the 2:1 is more generous than everyone I know in similar arrangements. Most O&G guys I know that are on call one weekend a month or whatever are just on call.

I assume this is some property managers based on your post history. Ive lived in what are supposed to be fairly high end complexes in uptown dallas, and I've never met a competent person that works in an on site management position so its likely these people are just going to find something to bitch about no matter what.

Well see that sucks though, lol.

The reality is businesses need people on the weekends. All I'm trying to do is admit it sucks and compensate them. Not overly, but to a degree they can admit its likely fair.

Seems very reasonable. I was thinking 6 hours for working 4.

Consult a local employment lawyer. This is ripe for a potential FLSA violation, even if you're trying to do right by your employees, the regulations won't judge you by your heart.

Not the best attitude from you there. Just saying.

Weekends are tough when it's mostly a Monday-Friday gig. I'm not saying your policy isn't fair or that it's wrong but Saturday is a tough one for a lot of people to give up. Especially if they have kids.

Could they do a Friday the next week so they could have a 3 day weekend?

I think what you’re offering is fair, but if it had to be a Monday when it could be a Friday, that’s the only way I could think it better.

If they agreed to work an occasional Saturday and they’re not wanting to do it, then find their replacements.

Every third week I work the weekend. That’s 12 days on before my next day off. I still have time to have a life. Tell your employees to pound sand.

Your offer sounds fair, that being said, if I had to work 1-2 Saturdays every month I would be looking for employment elsewhere.
