After talking to several people over the last few months, it seems like a bunch of them are working from home, a lot of these jobs pay a decent wage and insurance but the people have started very profitable side gigs or it has allowed them to have childcare and insurance covered by someone at home, letting the other spouse start a business etc
With that said what is the going rate going to be for people that have to come into the office in the next couple years. Not high skilled people or managers, I’m talking about the people making 40K-90K now

companies are going to pay the same as they do now. They will take less qualified people if they must. costs of living will outpace wage growth. any job that can be done from home can be done from overseas. imo.

True for some industries. Very untrue for others.

That’s a 50,000 wage range. You don’t think some managers and skilled workers are making between 80,000-90,000?

You think someone working from home making 40,000 has the same skill set/job description/experience as someone making 90,000?

I’ve seen lots of people in the 40k-70k range have their job shipped overseas by employee within the last 2 years. That 70k salary gets them four equally qualified English speaking Indians on call 24/7 that they can replace for any reason with a quick email.

Nope, just trying weed out the guy that was going to say I’m a programmer making 250K from home or I’m a salesman that goes into the office that clears 400K.
Or the guy that was going to say he lets his employees work from home and they all make 100K

Everyone talks about outsourcing overseas but what about outsourcing to people in rural areas without job opportunities
That would do jobs for much less than the people living in urban areas

fair enough. I agree WFH is here to stay for some, especially where licenses are needed.

A high number of manufacturers, software development, engineering, and accounting jobs have left.

MS azure cloud makes it easy to push 50 windows desktops out to $1000 laptops with a wifi connection. That trend isn't slowing.

Pay will likely decrease. We've filled our offices with temp workers, and exported an entire department to India.

Are we talking about a call center, or people who actually solve problems?

Entry level people making $40k can easily get into the $80k range after 20 years of experience. People working in rural Louisiana or Arkansas or Mississippi making $40k per year may cost the same company $60k in New York, Boston or San Fran. The ranges he proposed are not out of whack for same position in different areas or with longer seniority at a company.

Good idea but only issue is a lot of these rural areas have an unreliable internet connection. We have a few people who WFH out in rural areas and they constantly have connection/audio issues in our meetings.

About the same rate as non-motivated people have always gotten.

My hourly all inclusive costs is $140 and my Indian engineers are at $40.

Those engineering jobs are not coming back.

My office staff is located in Colombia. I get people with masters degrees for $1,000 a month.

If you have monkey work, you can get it for $500.

They are going to pay as much as they need to pay, or they are going to do without.

Get what you pay for.

Real life example. My 3 folks onshore are the same cost as my 10 folks offshore. It takes the offshore team 2 days to solve for X, while the onshore team is done by lunch on day 1.

When customers start complaining that velocity has gone to shite, executives see this and rebalance.

You can't ship everything to India and Gadansk, and don't even get me started about the turnover in those areas.

Wasn’t there a story about a guy making around $100k and subcontracted his work to someone in India for 25% of his salary. Then he got a side gig
