What site can I use to file taxes for free?

In the past I typically use turbo tax which claims to be free but is only actually free for certain filers.
Can anyone recommend a secure free filing site that won't get my identity stolen?
We are a pretty basic filing family. Standard deduction. 1 kid, hsa, dependent care fsa, retirement withholdings, etc... And we don't file state taxes as we are in Tennessee.
Nothing out of the ordinary. Tia.

How about somewhere where I can file online and set my refund to direct deposit.

If you are doing standard filing with no special aspects like home office or small business, how is turbo tax online not free? Their federal filing is most definitely free but sometimes states can have a fee.

It is not free. They always make you buy the basic version to complete filing.
There is an interesting podcast about the "turbo tax free" scam.

Is it really worth it to save like $50?

I assume filing on any other actually free (as in credit karma me ruined above) site is the same as using turbo tax, why pay $50 for the same free product?

There's a risk of identity theft with online transactions. We all recognize this as true. I have no other recs for you except:
Go to human resources today and change your W-4 filing to create another exemption or 2 so that you don't experience a tax refund and have to worry about identity theft filing for next year.
A little forward planning can solve a load of problems.

I saw a commercial for H&R Block being free online but haven’t looked into it all and have always heard bad things about them

are you sure people aren't confusing "free to file" vs "free to start?"
Only the basic free online version is free to file. All the others are free to start but then you must pay for the package to file. I have searched for articles on this "scam" and all I find are that it is free and simple to use for basic returns.

I think there are many free efile options including:
- turbo tax
- H&R block
- Taxact
- TaxSlayer
- freetaxusa
- efile.com
etc.

I’ve used credit karma the last few years and it’s been free for federal and state. I plan to do so again this year, it’s a good interface and my taxes are at the same level of complication as yours.

I've used freetaxusa.com for the last 5-6 years. Works well for basic filling. Small fee for State filling but free federal

I have used FreeTaxUSA for years with no problem. Pretty good UI, and it will keep your info from last year and prefill most of the form for you. Really pleased with it.
ETA: State is $10. Federal is free.

There was an article, in the WSJ I believe, about how Turbo Tax had a free option but made it hard to find (e.g., when you google turbo tax only the paid versions show). The IRS has made TT make it easier to find, but their counter is to make more things not free (e.g., student loan interest deduction, etc.). So if you truly have a straight forward standard deduction filing it will be free to file federal taxes on TT. My assumption is if you have almost any other one-off deduction you will have to pay. I always had to pay because I had a brokerage account.

The 1 kid makes it jump to the basic package. The same thing applies for HR Block.
As others have pointed out, the only other free site I have seen was Credit Karma. They obviously use your data to try to sell you credit cards, loan refinances....

Post office. Mail it.
This was the route I went with for years. I would use TT to begin my return, then I would click the "check out your return button" and fill in the data on an online form. Drop in mail, profit.
