Anybody here have any experience with these? Volkswagen's new 3rd-row SUV. My wife is suddenly obsessed with them -- I'm guessing because she thinks nobody else has one.

She has a laundry list of things she wants in a car, but really all I want is something that is safe for her and the kids, and I can count on it to start and blow cold air when asked to.

Previously she was saving toward a used Dodge Durango, but these Atlas are priced very competitively compared to even a 2 or 3 year old Dodge.

I was literally just looking at those last night. 35k for a 2018 sounds like a great deal but I've never owned a VW.

I know they're pretty well known for their safety.. but like you I have no idea about their reliability or cost of ownership

my wife had a Passat when we first met. fun car, very quiet and great driving car. Maintenance was expensive and at 60K they recommended a timing belt and other things which was a 2-3k. the mechanical fuel pump when out and scared the cam shaft and it had to be replaced on VW's dime, id hate to see what that would have cost us.

Unless I'm reading it wrong -- and that's definitely possible -- they are offering a 6 year 72k mile warranty for these, which seems like another notch in the Plus column

I believe the Atlas won best in class safety.

We are looking at getting one too. We will probably be waiting till the 19s come out and then buy a new 18

I’m in the market for a 3 row suv and was set on a Durango, however I’ve been reading a bit about the atlas and it’s piqued my interest.

Interested to seeing some of the responses here.

Add my wife to this list. She has a Grand Cherokee now but really likes the looks and 3rd row seat of the Atlas. They are definitely starting to sell them. Just the other day I saw two in a small town within a couple miles of each other.

Most of the knocks that I've seen on them are for it being under-powered for such a heavy vehicle.. The fact that it won't let my wife fly off the starting line or dart in and out of lanes, is probably a net positive for me.

In regards to the reliability, a 6yr/72k warranty is doing an awful lot to ease me concerns there

If safety is a priority for you, why not the Volvo XC90? Has won SUV of the year and numerous other awards. It was completely redesigned from the groundup for the 2016 model year. The Scandinavia design, especially the inside, looks great. And Volvo makes the best and most comfortable seats in the industry, so will be great for long drives.

If you want to drive something that not many other people are driving, you can also look at the Land Rover Discovery. Again it was completely redesigned for 2017 and is brand new and of course comes with some of the best off road capabilities you'll ever need.

Xc90 out of our price range unfortunately.

that's part of what drew us to the Atlas...... we were expecting to be shopping for a used suv that was 2-4 years old, but the VW checks alot of the boxes, is a brand new vehicle, and isn't much more expensive

Bought one of these for my wife last week. I’m very impressed with it so far, and she loves it. It is great to drive, looks nice, and of course the warranty was a huge selling point with me. Ended up with an SE with leather for under $33k. A similarly equipped Pilot was almost $10k more.

I heard a lot of good things about the new Atlas.

My daily car is a Dodge Durango, 4 years/60K miles with zero issue.

It couldn't be wrong with either Atlas or Durango.

Where'd you find this? I'm only seeing that leather is offered on the SEL Premium.

Sorry, I misspoke. It is actually the V-Tex leatherette, not the full leather. Still much nicer than the cloth in my truck ha. Got it at Southpoint VW in Baton Rouge.

Gotcha. I wish they offered leather on something other than their 50k model.

I have a VW SUv. Cost of ownership is high and reliability is low. In addition to the emissions scandal, this model (and others) was subject to ANOTHER lesser known class action involving sunroofs and water drainage that has been costly to fix (since I got grandfathered out of that settlement). Also, I had a gas leak in the car within a few months of owning it. I would not recommend buying VW from my experiences. The juice has not been worth the squeeze.

It’s a nice truck. Looked at SEL. We like crossovers as our around town vehicle. Got it on interstate and like others said it’s grossly underpowered. For 40k to drag and perform like that hard pill to swallow. I think they address that issue without price increase they’ve got best SUV in that class. Tech, warranty, safety, and looks are great.
