I am purchasing a vehicle today. The vehicle has a lien, the lien holder uses electronic titling and does not have title in house. I am being told I have to wait for the title to be released prior to being able to drive this vehicle which may take a few weeks. Is it not possible to obtain temp tags/registration to be able to drive it up until then? Any help would be appreciated

I think that may be the best we can come up with

Could always tow the thing home...

Just keep the bill of sale in the car in case you get pulled over to show to the cop. I doubt many cops would still issue a ticket in that circumstance.

Bigger issue may be insurance, so check with them.

1. First off, buying a car from someone who does not have the title is a huge hassle.

2. I have done it before, but the seller has to take more off my agreed to price for just the extra work.

3. Let's say it is a $20,000 car. I would pay the seller $14,000 now. (At an actual bank, in front of all the cameras, with both our drivers licenses in the hand of the teller while we obtain a counter check from my bank filled out to the seller)

4. The seller has to come up with the remaining amount immediately and pay off the title.

5. When the title arrives, we meet up and do the same thing again $5000 (minus a thousand) for all this trouble on my side.

6. I will have paid $19,000 for this $20,000 car.

7. In Alabama, you can't get a new title or a tag or drive the car until you have the original title.

8. You withold $$ to keep the seller motivated. If the seller has all the $$ they will never call the title holding company daily to speed it up.

I pretty much refuse to buy a car from someone who does not hold the title. They are almost always poor at finances and don't have room to negotiate a reasonable price.

I would not pay for the vehicle without getting the title at the same time. Bought a privately owned vehicle in Tennessee then moved back to Louisiana. The seller took my money and ghosted. Meanwhile the Tennessee plates expired and I couldn't get new Louisiana plates without the title. It was quite a hassle.

See my post above. I had a friend that had the same thing happen to them.

I will occasionally buy a car without a title (with the limits I posted above), but I have to have strict conditions met and not many can meet them.

most likely someone still owes money on it if what your being told is the troof.

If it's a used car dealership, they have 30 days to provide a title in the state of Arkansas. IDK where you are though. I've bot cars at dealer auction from new car store trade ins that car mart had a lien on from several years ago and they forgot to release the lien in the computer but it was showing up as having a lien. I think the dealer you're buying from don't have the title b/c he's waiting on it from seller or auction or possibly behind on his own loan bills.

I'm not in LA, but I sold a vehicle 2 months ago and just gave the title to the guy a few days ago. Al he needed was a copy of my registration and another document to get a 50-Day Tag

In Alabama, you can't register, title, or get a tag without the bill of sale and the sellers title. Even worse (on out of state cars) you only have 20 or so days to submit all the paperwork or you have to pay a penalty.

Buying without a title is a risky proposition in my state.
