Wife and I went through a full estate plan years back with an estate planning attorney. (will/living/trust...the works)

Fast forward a half dozen years and we'd like to make a small update to the guardianship plan for our children. I've reached out to the attorney and the answers are slightly vague and a bit sale-y. (offering additional services beyond this 2-3 sentence change)

My legal expert (Google) suggests I need to do a codicil. I don't see where it should cost me more than 1 hour of fees, but I dunno. Literally remove person X, replace with person Y.

Does anyone have any input or clear-cut best practice? I'm assuming this updated document would be filed with my local courthouse as well?

Every state could have different requirements. But I would think you can look up the requirements to make an amendment and do that so you incorporate it to the original unchanged will?

Assuming you’re in Louisiana, and really don’t want to pay, look up the Louisiana civil code form requirements for an olographic codicil (handwritten). Of course if you screw it up or make your will more complicated, you’re going to regret not paying a lawyer.

Several problems
NEVER Google about legal matters
Trusts are very rarely needed and you were probably over charged.
Codicils are very problematic and can change your current will

I would advise you consult
Southern Legal Clinics.
They charged me $300 for a will, POA and Medical POA. Family business and very knowledgeable

No consultation fees either!!!

Your profile says you are a lawyer. Am I safe in assuming you are connected with the Rooney family that seems to operate that law firm?

That said, are you suggesting a complete re-write? I'm not sure what they have suggested I do, just seen hourly rates and led to believe it should be pretty straight forward and simple.

I am certain I paid too much, but I did go through a very established and well trusted firm that handles such things specifically. So I did chalk it up to paying for expertise. (which is really what all legal expenses are I suppose)

I am suggesting you do not write a codicil and take the advice of your attorney. Do not rely on Google or AI

Nothing quite like that, but a change to plan C in the event of multiple untimely demises.

....Unless you want a legal opinion on the ramifications of removing person X, and would could happen if they are replaced with person Y.

Decedents who follow this thought process can leave behind a legacy of litigation and feuding heirs.

Codicil is fine. It is an easy lift.

What do you mean yikes?
Do you think that is high or low?

If the OP wants to go the cheap (or free) route , an olographic codicil will work provided it is done properly.
