Tiger attorneys: How much do you think Dr. Dao got out of United Airlines in his settlement for being dragged off a plane?

I'd guess $1.33MM. An even million for him and 330k for his lawyer. And an air-tight contract that he'll never discuss it publicly.

The good doctor should send a $100k check to the lady who can be heard on video screaming "look what you're doing to him!". She definitely bumped up that settlement amount.

I'm not saying it's right - and a jury probably would've given him $40k, max - but from a PR standpoint it's money well-spent.

Enough to cover his royalties from the book deal he would otherwise have, plus his medical bills, pain and suffering, and attorney fees.

And probably a lifetime award of whatever their top level medallion program is!!!

Eh, I think a jury would have given him much more than that. Keep in mind, though, that I'm neither an attorney nor have any legal experience.

TL;DR: UAL went full retard.

After hearing of the incident, I checked UAL's Contract of Carriage (you can read it HERE). UAL can only voluntarily or involuntarily remove you from an overbooked flight before boarding (Rule 25). Since the plane had already been boarded, Rule 25 can no longer be applied to remove a passenger even if the plane is overbooked; the only way to get a passenger off the plane at that point is by sweetening the voluntary deal to take a later flight or through Rule 21: Refusal of Transport. UAL could use Section H of Rule 21 as a defense, but such a defense could fall apart pretty quickly considering the number of witnesses with contrary testimonies.

Considering UAL broke the contract that they wrote and that their customers never read, I'll consider UAL lucky that the guy isn't the chairman of their board right now.

Remember he also has a claim against the Police Department that concussed him and broke his teeth.

$5 mill total for both the PD and UA.

Since it became such a huge story I think he should be able to get a huge pain and suffering amount. I mean didn't this make international news. Couldn't claim enormous enotional distress from being shown up beat up around the world?

United's top tier program is called Global Services. It trumps any other airlines program. For one, it's invite only. Nobody knows exactly what the qualifications are for it, probably the best kept secret outside of this settlement.

I was Global Services for 1-year. I cannot begin to tell you the treatment that I received for that one year. If they were to treat all of their passengers like that then the airline would win best airline of the year award with no question.

i believe it will be a 2.5 million dollar settlement including free tickets for a year, free 1st class upgrade for x amount of years, and free drinks (other than the complementary soft drinks) for life. It will be a very very quick settlement.

Yes, but if this goes to court, then United Airlines will go down the shitter, so they will make a quick settlement that wont be publicized as much as if it was brought in front of a jury.

I find it pretty funny they would include United perks in the settlement? If I was him, I'd turn that crap down. Maybe if he's a frequent flier with them or something, but if I have other options that are competitively priced and timed I'm going someone else as much as possible if something like this happened to me.
